Guy cruised a sailboat all over the Caribbean. In an out of the way area, a high speed boat approached him. Became apparent they were going to attempt to board him. He yelled stay away. They kept coming.
The guy kept on board a large gauge pump shot gun loaded with slugs, as well as an AR15, for such situations.
Gun fight starts. He puts slugs into the bad guys' hull at the bow's waterline.
Speed boat starts sinking rapidly.
He motors away.

Mike, same deal in the Bahamas. Carlos Lehder-Rivas owned Norman's Cay in the Exumas during the early 80's when he bought the cooperation of the newly independent government. The prime minister, (Sir) Lyndon Pindling and most of his cabinet were believed to be on Lehder's payroll. It was around that time that most U.S. fishing/cruising boaters started carrying arms for self protection. A 12 gauge, a stainless steel Remington, and the AR-15 were the weapons of choice. The threat and, presumably, the corruption have since been reduced, but most private boaters still carry self defence weapons in those waters.

Some of these ships don't seem to have much in the way of crew or accomodations despite their size, keeping enough additional personnel aboad to provide for 5-10 guys per shift could be tough, no?
Seems like they might really need to start having their guys trained and maybe augmented with a few real professionals? Maybe the time frame that they are in the dangerous waters is such that you could board/escort and then hope off when they were safely out to sea?

Do they ever get hassled for the weapons by local customs?

We did find a bale of pot one time and tried for 10 minutes to get it on board (to turn into the authorities of course...
) but the dam thing was waterlogged and we coulden't pick it up.
