Worried About Houston
#46
Just talked to Globester, so here's an update: He and family are ok. They have some tree limbs down, are without power and have only a trickle of water pressure. Other than that they're A-ok. He's out trying to find gas to power his chainsaw as one of his down trees is blocking neighbor's driveway. He said Houston is a mess. If he doesn't get power in a day or so, he'll move the family up here to stay with us until things are better. His I-phone uses mucho power when in internet mode, so he's conserving. Here's a shot of the street in front of his house. According to him, that water in the street is a foot or so deep.

I was glad to hear Globe, Mrs. globe, and the little Globes were all ok. My mom also lives in houston and I talked to her today. Similar report. Lots of debris and tree limbs down, power out, but all fine otherwise. What a relief.

Thanks for the reports. It looks like a pain in the rear, but it doesn't look too terrible. Once it gets past Adrienne I know I'll breathe a sign of relief.

You can relax, it never got anywhere near Adrienne if she's at home here in Austin. We didn't get a drop of rain up here just 150 miles away from Houston. Just breezy and cloudy.

Oh, good to hear. We had a lot of wind clear out here, too, believe it or not. That's one massive hurricane!

OMG those pictures are horrific! That building was tore up something fierce! Don't Houston businesses put in hurricane-resistant windows?!? Guess not. What a shame. And what a MESS. I saw similar pics on the news not long ago. That place is TORE UP. Sorry to see that happen, Texas.

Bonnie,
Same thing happened in early 80's with Alicia. It's a cascading effect. One piece of debris that catches one window essentially starts a chain reaction. That building is where I used to work in the late 90's - Texas Commerce Tower (now JPMorganChase Tower). It's on the north end of downtown. During Alicia, the big damage was about 8 blocks farther south in downtown.
One piece of bad news out of downtown is that Brennan's Restaurant burned to the ground late Friday night as the storm closed in. Brennan's was a great place to go for Sunday brunch. Really too bad.
Looks like it will be the better part of a week before some things start to return to normal. As for us here in Dallas, I think we got MAYBE an inch or two of rain. Even less out at our weekend place southwest of Fort Worth. Clear as a bell this morning.

Dang, they really should have gotten that missile impact resistant glass on that skyscraper. It would have been so much cheaper and smarter in the long run if they'd just spent a couple extra bucks. Or doesn't Texas worry about hurricanes? Is that what happened? Do you all just not get many hurricane threats? I have to wonder . . . because Mike obviously had his boards all ready to go. I guess it takes a common homeowner to figure out how to protect one's property?!? Good thing nobody was in that building I guess.
