Default DIY Harness install in 997S -- The Turtle Way

Spend hours on the internet debating what to buy. Decide on 6pt harnesses, with clip in mount on outboard side, and bolt-in on tunnel side.

Order parts. For inexplicable reasons, use as many vendors as possible.

Parts arrive. Harness bar damaged. Send it back. Realize belts are too big to leave in street car. Order clips for tunnel side.

Go to Sears to buy Torx socket set. Buy metric 3/8 socket set, Torx socket set, combination wrench set, and tool box. Realize tool box AND wife will not fit in 997S. Think about what to do... Chose wisely, still married.

Wait for first REALLY hot weekend to do work.

Unbolt and remove passenger seat. 20 minutes.

Scrape knuckles and nearly strip bolt trying to remove seat belt anchor. Try every tool in house. 2hrs.

Swallow pride, & call deep_uv. "It's probably got locktite on it. Heat it up with a torch" (under his breath <dumbass>).

Bolt comes out in 10 seconds.

Install outboard clip mount. No problem. Look at tunnel side clip mount. Think it won't work. Use second outboard clip mount on tunnel side.

Put seat back in car. Clip in belts, sit in car admiring work.

Drop wrench between seat and tunnel trying to unclip in-board belt. Spend 20 mins trying to get wrench out. Realize there is no way in hell the tunnel side clip can be removed.

Take seat out. Figure out how to use tunnel clip mount. Reinstall seat.

Total elapsed time to remove and replace passenger seat: 4 hours.

Remove, drivers seat and install harness mounts. Reinstall seat. Total elapsed time: 45 mins.

Take car to track. Stand by as friends admire handy work. Tell them it takes about 45 minutes to do each seat.

funny
And what makes it funny is that we can all see ourselves doing exactly what was done - many times

It can actually be done in about 20 - 30mins. At least that is the time I usually spend dropping the car off, picking it up and writing the check.

I normally use a method that cuts about 5 minutes off that time. It's called a Visa card. For some reason, I decided I needed to do this myself.

Mike, next time just give me a call. I've got all the tools you could possibly drop between your seats. I'll be doing the same shortly - hilarity to follow.

What! No picture to document your DIY project? As a true Turtle, you should have at least 100 digital pictures and a blog page dedicated to this install.

Get going!

I fixed a friend's BMW the other day. It turned out pretty good I thought.

Per Sisco's request, here is the only photo documentation I have of the process. Testing out the lap and sub belts.

Mike, I think your time was right on. It was your projections that were off. :

Try expressing the average. It doesn't look so Turtle.

Considering that what was wrong was a turn signal light was out I would say it turned out quite well.

Looks more like you were testing out a toilet seat.

Mike, GREAT story!

Is that BMW one of their newest Chris Bangle designs? Looks better than some of the ones leaving the factory these days...
