I am unemployed. Fortunately we have a superior welfare system in Canada so we can all afford Porsches and stuff.

Makes me think of the late Steven Jay Gould who made the comment "I study some of the most boring things (snails) in the world, but what they can tell me is really cool."

I had missed that somehow... oops. Those invertebrates are outside my realm of paleo knowledge. I did much better with big dead things.

I just said, "Um.....ah.....Go call Granddaddy...." Then I made a joke, "Maybe he wasn't studying fossilized worm jaws, but fossilized worm straws." Good for a laugh from the 6 and 8 year old, but none of us knows the answer yet.

Lots of inverts have jaws or bone like structures. Bloodworms to Octopus, Cuttle fish and even the Giant squid. It has a beak like a parrot and a ring with teeth in many of its suckers. Spineless does not mean boneless. You can have a spine and not have bones too. Sharks and rays are called cartilaginous fish. No bones about it.
Um..Yawn, OK... back to the thread allready in progress.

My kids asked me the other day how the worms, as invertebrates, had jaws, which are bones.

Well all was going fine, until I had to fire VR. You see, his job is to extract the semen from the chickens so that we can, through artificial insemination, create more chickens. Damn guy was drinking on the job. Had to let him go.
Anyway, those chickens still have pictures of him up in the 'ol chicken coup. Never seen chickens so upset. I may have to let him have his job back. VR definately has a gift.
