Come on Mike, you know that learning how to ski in California means that you learn what the proper clothing for the slopes is this year and the right place to buy it.

Double black diamonds in Texas???? Damn right! I met a girl in Ft. Worth one night that had a couple of black diamond hills that were just great to glide down.....

When you get big hills like that there's usually a lake in the valley inbetween... where I like to go boating.

Oh . . . my . . . GAWD. You guys did an EXCELLENT job of turning around a simple ski slope post into making fun of California and uh . .. other things. I'm not a clothing guru, Bob -- that's SoCal -- those Hollywood wannabes fuel the economy. Not me. WalMart is good enough in most cases. Clothes are clothes. Well, ski clothes can't be bought at Walmart, I admit.

Anyway . . . I know how to ski, but I have not been skiing enough times to try on a diamond slope. I'm barely a blue sloper! Hey . . . it's like driving -- until you have the seat time you can't advance. At least I'm not an idiot green sloper going down a red slope. Sound like someone you know?

Bon

Diamond's are a girl's best friend.
Seriously, two day and the skiers of the G-R forum will have you skiing the steeps.

(what's a red slope?)

Red slopes are where they make you ski in Calyforya if you show up in last year's fashions.

***Bob -- WRONG, but funny. The slopes here are labeled kinda like at the track. Green is for novice, blue for intermediate, and red for advanced. The diamond slopes are considered 'pro', if you will. If you've only had a few days on the slopes, you go for green, blue if you're brave or if your skills at stopping, turning, and zig-zagging are good enough to handle a steeper slope. I usually go on a mixed blue-red slope if I'm up to it. Green is too easy, even though I've only had five days worth of skiing. I'm definitely not ready for a red slope. And unlike what Bob thinks, my ski clothes aren't exactly fashionable. I bought what was the best deal (function over form). Like I said earlier, if I could have bought them at WalMart, I would have. I don't ski enough to go for famous maker names. That will change next year, as we are going to Austria in February. So there.

Are "Red" slopes only at one ski area, or is that being used throughout the Sierras?

Green (circle)
Blue (square)
Black (diamond)

was instituted long ago to differentiate runs nationally. Just like track run groups.

Now they have double blues and double blacks.

I have never heard of reds. Although I have seen blood in the snow, but that was usually on blacks.

Its kinda like a meatball flag when you find that, or more particularly when its you leaving the trail of red all the way down to the bottom

I haven't skiied much, so I could very well be wrong. I saw the red slopes indicated at Heavenly Valley last February. I didn't actually notice if the slopes were physically marked as such, I only saw it on the map. So like I said, I could easily be wrong. I'll look closer next time (we're going again in November if the weather cooperates).

Oh no, evey map I've ever looked at the chairlifts are always marked in red. Bon, were seeing chairlifts as if they were runs. It would explain why you didn't see them marked as such on the mtn.

No, in actuality, I probably just got confused when I saw green and blue, and based on my track experience, I probably just assumed the next level was red. I don't honestly remember seeing the chair lifts mapped out, only little X's as to which lift goes to what runs. You guys watch out! I might be a beginner now, but I have plans to go pro someday. ROFL.
