Default Name that Porsche

I figured this would get attention here sooner . . . a friend in another forum asked about what kind of Porsche this is. I didn't want to offer my thoughts until you guys told me for sure:

Thanks!

DOH! Thanks, VR. You know . . . it's amazing. This is the most I've learned in this section of the forum since I started posting here. You guys are great. I've been googling the 996 TT for a few minutes. Pretty pricey car! Can't find much. I was hoping to find a picture to have my friend compare it to, preferrably in graphite grey. No luck yet . . . I've only found a couple of blacks and a yellow. I wouldn't mind having that car. It's got the nose of a Carrera, the rear of a 911 or something. Okay, I'm wandering a bit. I like it!

A Carrera is a 911 and vice-versa.

Oh, duh. Well, that could be why the poster asked, "Which 911 is this?" Lol. The nose sure has changed over the years. I was thinking more along the lines of a Carrera GT, though, as far as the nose goes. Obviously the rear is nothing like the Carrera GT. The rear of those cars almost look like an NSX engineer got into the design mix. ALMOST. I have odd interpretations of car designs sometimes, so don't get upset.

You would want the current 997 TT anyway. All rear engined Porsches of that style are generically called "911s", the various versions of the 911s over the recent (since '89) have also beeen distinguished by the internal model designation from Porasche: (USA models)

'89-'94 - 964
'94-'98 - 993
'99-'04 - 996
'05-'07 - 997

Then there are Boxster, Cayman, and Cayenne models, and the soon to be Panamera.

Then you have different model versions (that vary in availability year to year)

Carrera Coupe (hardtop)
Cabriolet (convertible)
Targa (the whole roof rolls back like one big sunroof)
Turbo (self explanatory)

You then have the regular and "S" versions which mean different things depending on the year but 'generally" the S is like a Turbo in style (but without the turbo engine) unless you are talking about a 997 in which case it is a different engine...but not the 993 'S" which has the same engine as....ahh forget it.............................................

Keep going Dave . . . I can read about car stuff for days. I mean, it's like I said -- this is the most I've learned in this part of the forum since I started visiting. On a side note . . . if I put my rennlist decal on my Spec Miata, will it gain any horsepower?

So where do the 914s, 912s, 928s and 944s fit in to all this, other than being a lot less costly? So we have the 91x series, 92x series, 93x series, 94x series, 96x series, and 99x series. How come there isn't say, a 959? 979? 987? Just curious . . . and kinda bored, lol. I heard somewhere that the numerical designations were patented, such that a manufacturer could only use certain numbers. For instance, Mazda has a 323, 626, and 929. Is that why Porsche didn't use other numbers? Or is it similar to BMW where the (for example) 325i is a 3.25 litre engine (is that right? can't remember for absolute certain)?

Side note: Thanks for your patience! I love learning! I wish some other poster (wink) would try asking questions once in a while, too.

the 911 was 901 until another company got upset. early 911 parts have 901 as the first three digits. There is also a 959. Killer car, way ahead of its time. boxster, cayman and cayanne all have numbers as well. 944 turbo is 951 and the like.
