Is this car that GOOD?
So, I am headed up North over the Border for business this week and I had to take her out for 30 min in order to help me sleep - as I am looking at the illuminated dashboard gauges and the way they are beautifully laid out and the nicely integrated SC which looks much better than in the 911 and I think to myself - "Is this car really that good or am I missing something/delusional"?
First- The GT4 is one of the best looking modern day sports cars in their line-up today and certainly punches above its belt for what I like. It looks dimmensionally small(although GT3 is only a couple inches bigger), has a wing, and boy is it full of curves and looks great from every angle and certainly looks "Porsche"
Second-Car handles on rails and is perfectly damped. Maybe the PCCBs help a little but I like the damping better than in the GT3. Also, the mid-engine layout gives it a perfect mid-section bias under the seats that makes it so predictable, yet fun, because it inspires confidence which begs you to have more fun with it.
Third - The engine - Well, every one says it is a detuned Carrera S, does not feel "special" because it does not have a proven race engine, and the gearing is too long!!!?????. Coming from the 991 GT3, which is a marvel of a car, and one of the best modern NA engines manufactured today and it would be easy to cast those stones. But, lets look at the GT4 on its own. I disagree with the gearing being too long. I have plenty fun shifting on the streets and I actually like the gearing. Shorter gearing may of made it quicker to 60 but, maybe not, because you lose time spending too much time shifting so there is a trade-off. To me the engine also does that feel like it does in the Carrera S. The engine note and the way it delivers its power is very different. If Porsche would of said it was a newly developed engine, from scratch, for the GT4 they would of sold me.
So, I ask the question - IS the GT4 that good because it was not supposed to be???- a philosophical question maybe

Yes it has the chassis, the looks, the feel, the balance, the sangfroid, who cares about power? Power is the easiest thing to come by (4.0L conversion, terrbo, bolt on + tune etc) and it is a more reliable motor than the GT3

Agree with Jimmy's comments.
Can't imagine how deep the dealer lists would be if PAG dropped a GT3 engine in the GT4.

It's not as good as the hype for me yet, but I've yet to take it to the track. That will hopefully change next Monday and I hope I fall in love with it more as I get quality seat time. She is pretty to look at though.

Yes this ^^ I felt the exact same way on my test drive, wait until you get to do a proper drive in it, it will exceed those expectations even further.

Not surprised. I would say the same thing. On the street, the car is great, but it's not any greater than a non-GT Porsche. On the track, the car really really shines, IMO. Each time I take the car back to the track, it amazingly gets better.

It really is a great car. I have read numerous reviews and comments. Yet I am still stunned by how well the car drivers after all the high expectations people have set.
My car is currently in for some spa (coating) treatment. Will share my thoughts and pics once car is ready for some pics ...
