The mid cycle refresh of the 981 boxster and Cayman will be known as the 718? http://jalopnik.com/2016-porsche-box...718-1747221925

Saw that.
So I'm guessing this is the standard 2.0T used in Audi and VW.
Lag on that motor is annoying.

Used to own one of those too. Fun little car, but holy crap did it lag. That was part of the charm, I guess. I haven't driven a new design 4 cylinder turbo in a few years, so I'm not sure if the lag issue has been solved. My wife has a Q5 and used to own an a4 Avant several years ago. She loves the things, but I can't stand driving them.

The WRX sound doesn't come from the fact the engine is flat, it's because the exhaust manifold is very unequal (which is very common in flat 4's for packaging reasons). I would expect Porsche will use an equal length manifold to ensure it doesn't sound like a cheap japanese car.
This however is a bigger problem. One of the big reasons for the lag on a WRX is the distance from the exhaust ports to the turbine housing. On an i4 you can position the turbine very close to the ports but on a flat 4 the ports are at opposite ends to begin with so you can never get the turbine close. On a flat 6 you just put a turbo each side and it's problem solved but you can't do that on a flat 4 trying to run a turbo of just two cylinders makes it shockingly laggy. Without some kind of electric engine fill I'm not feeling positive about a turbo flat 4 at all.

I have no doubt the 718 series of cars will do well in the future but I also believe we'll look back on the 981 especially the Spyder and GT4 as the high water mark for this era. I missed out on ordering a new 993 (my 1st 911 was a 996) but feel fortunate to get a GT4 especially with the 3.8, manual transmission and LWB before the change over.

I also agree with the comments about the 981 being the high water mark, and am glad to have a chance to have a GT4.

no one hasn't posted yet but here is more info from MotoAuthority. Rumor power numbers look pretty good.

I take back my answer in the other thread. GT4 prices are going to go up. HAHA The new front and rear lights do not look good and 4 cylinder turbos are not desirable at all.
