718 rebranding makes a lot of sense. May help with some of the stigma of not buying a 911, to know this car continues the lineage of a historic model. Also think it's cool that the Cayman will be less expensive than the Boxster.

What's in a name though....at the end of the day, it's a way to help sell 4-cylinder cars.

Think this means the next 718 GT4 will get the 3L turbo from the 911? Hard to imagine from a marketing perspective that they'd want to position an NA 3.8 as the top spec option over all the turbo engines...

I would think they would try to keep the GT cars as much NA as possible or if so incorporate hybrid technologies like the 918.

Next GT4 take engine from GT3/GT3rs

GT4 will always have to be comfortably behind GT3 in performance. At least so long as 911 is a higher model than 718.

Current 4.0L GT3 RS engine is already nearly maxed out, so to increase performance of the next GT3, the only choices are to a) reduce weight significantly or b) change engine / add electric power.

So it would be cool if the GT4 eventually got the current gen GT3 engine, but I really do not see it happening soon.

It's a different look - a little more feminine in the face, which is not what these cars need. Front lights are more bulbous - 991 style. Don't like it.

Rear lights look a little better than the 981, though.

He may not have meant all GT cars. Even with the success of the GT4, I don't see them doing a bespoke engine for the next one for cost reasons, nor using the engine from either the current or the next GT3, so all that will be left will be turbos. I'd love to be wrong (well, except that being wrong would probably negatively impact my GT4's future value ), but I don't see how NA could be in the GT4's future.

I think it's more likely that 981.2 GT4 uses Carrera S motor again (3.0 Turbo from 991.2).

Carrera S motor with power kit.

Make it happen!

And making slightly less power in the Cayman due to "more complicated exhaust routing"

I wonder what kind of magic Porsche puts in to the new 4 cylinders engine . Coming from a lightly tuned 400hp CLA45 AMG, 4 banger with big turbo can be have so much lag at the lower rev range.

Another question to pose would be.. How successful will the 718 iteration be with a FI motor relative to the NA motor in the 981 gt4..

Yep, I would expect that it would be tuned between Carrera and Carrera S (just where it sits today). They use the same 3.0L motor (with different turbos and tuning) now for 370hp or 420hp. I think 395-405 hp is where it will land.

Probably not immediately, but eventually hybrid electric motors will assist the combustion engine and provide torque fill to make the lag imperceptible.

Or electrically-spooled turbos would achieve much the same thing with less weight penalty.
