I looked at a Camaro ZL1 1LE today - talk me off the ledge

LOL: "2. I need a periscope or a nascar spotter to tell me where the track is. I can't see jack out of the car on track! I stuck my head out the window like a dog to try to look ahead..where in the GT4 you can see out the front and side window easily."

Agree with the others in general, but I'd go with a Grand Sport of Z06 if you want cheap(ish) speed. The GS is $65k or so used or $75k new and as quick around many tracks as a 991 GT3. A good friend has a GS, and it has mega grip and brakes, to the point that its 465HP feels balanced rather than overpowered at all. I've ridden in it on track many times.

Can't accelerate through the corners with most of the weight on the front wheels. Traction limited. Slow is boring. Selling my 'Vette.
Also they spring it hard because it's top-heavy. My 993 is sprung very soft because it's not. Soft means you're good for another 10mph on a slippery bumpy off-ramp vs hard springs. Notice on your Porsche the engine should be no higher than your kneecap. Not counting accessories (intake).

There was a similar thread on Rennlist a few months ago regarding Corvettes.
I was surprised how quick they were to agree that traction was a well known problem compared to rear engine.
Very knowledgeable group.

+1! The camaro is my least favorite of the muscle car group and the Dodge is my absolute favorite. It doesn't try to be a track car, it's comfortable, massive trunk space, quiet in the cabin but loud out the pipes, love it.

Exact opposite for me. The Dodge just comes across to me as a cheapo pile of junk, even if that's totally untrue.

I only sit in a Camaro. It felt huge and literally no visibility. The hood is endlessly long and tall, I felt like I could hit a child without knowing it.
To me, Sounds like huge power + massive tire is its formula to fast laps. Different approach comparing to the GT4.
I had a GT350 for 6 months, it has a great V8, 6-speed manual and well-tuned magnetic suspension. Very capable car but still felt like a boat comparing to a Porsche GT products.
Plus the fit and finish is just crap to say the best. Camaro is a bit better than the Mustang, but still bad.
For me, personally, I'd be kicking myself all day if I replace my GT4 with a GT350. To each their own, these cars are not for me.

The main difference is the handling. Porsche handles much much better. Camaro has com a long way from being a sloppy muscle car, but they're no where near a Cayman.
Next is the power train. Camaro MT isn't good and nor is the 10 speed traditional transmission. It struggles to put power down smoothly. Too much engine and too little chassis.
Check the the overall package. Camaro has sub par poor grade materials and build quality...its from a 25k car and you get what you pay for. Seats are not great and seating position isn't the best. Visibly sucks. Even the paint job is **** poor.
Last is its the branding. Camaro is a chevy. Cayman is a Porsche. Nuff said.
Camaro is the type of car people buy on a whim because they get exited by things that don't matter much after a few months of ownership.

Love the feedback from lots of guys who have never driven both chassis, you certainly have convinced yourselves. I sold my Boxster S 2 years ago, and bought a ‘17 Camaro SS 1LE. Best decision I’ve ever made. After driving my car on street and track, my dad sold his GT4 and bought a ZL1 1LE. He couldn’t be happier. The SS 1LE and ZL1 1LE without changing ANY parts, is track ready. They don’t overheat, they don’t understeer (shims/toe links required to say that about a GT4), they are reliable, and they are cheaper to run. The OE Ferodo brake pads on the ZL1 1LE withstood 6 days on track in Advanced/Instructor pace, 3 of which were at VIR 155+ mph 2x per lap. Oh, and those OE pads cost ~$210 for BOTH axles. Yeah, it’s heavier. 3775lbs in our case. The ZL1 1LE drives like Porsche’s GT dept made it.
I’m a National PCA instructor and LOVE Porsche’s, the 964 is my “dead guy car” as Jerry Seinfeld says. I tow my Camaro with my Cayenne S. But when the US is making the best bang for the buck cars in the world, I decided to vote with my wallet.
