OK, so I'm taking delivery of my first Porsche (ever!) either tomorrow or Saturday (was supposed to be today, but....oh, never mind) and of course it's a GT4. So pumped!
Anyway, here's the newbie question: with all the talk of the new platform, rebranding to the 718, etc, etc., when dealers say they have future allocations fully spoken for, and these allocations will be delivered in summer/early fall 2016, won't those cars be a 2017 model year and thus under the new branding and perhaps smaller engines (4 cyl turbos) vs the NA 6 monster in the 2016's?
Why would anyone order a 2017 if they weren't sure they could still get the killer combo of NA engine plus all the GT4 handling goodies, etc?
What am I missing?
Even IF they were designated as MY2017 cars (which I doubt because they're only legally required to switch to MY2017 as of calendar year 2017, and a model year can last longer than a calendar year) AND the 718s arrive on lots while GT4s are still also arriving (which I also doubt), that's not a problem. Before BMW fragmented the 3 Series to create the 4 Series, they routinely released the next-gen sedan about 18 months and at least one model year ahead of the coupe, so there was a time when for the same model year, the sedan was a newer generation and the coupe was the outgoing generation. I see no problem with Porsche selling 718s next to 981 GT4s. A GT4 is a different model anyway, and they're not going to call it a 718 because it's NOT a 718. Porsche isn't saying that any Boxster/Cayman sold after a given date will be called a 718 and have a particular motor; they're saying that the next-gen Boxster and Cayman will be called the 718 and have a particular motor. That's not retroactively imposed on previous-gen cars that may happen to be sold later.
The GT4 cars that will be built next spring and delivered during the first half of 2016 will all still be 2016 cars.
The new 718 cars will be officially introduced in early spring of 2016 and won't be in user hands until late fall 2016 here in the US at the earliest.
Ahhh, I see now. Hmmm, not sure I'd want to take delivery of a 2016 MY in late spring/summer, or even fall of 2016!
I like what this may mean for us: the total production run of the GT4 for this generation will be limited to what's being delivered over only (approximately) a single 12 month period - spring/summer of 2015 to spring/summer of 2016. Should mean that these cars hold value very well and may even appreciate as time goes by. Especially of the new platform does indeed forego the NA power plant and even more if they limit it to the 4 bangers vs the 6 !
I've been told the 718 boxster will appear before the 718 cayman...so even if the GT4 deliveries go into late fall (which I've also been told will happen) there will be no 718 cayman / GT4 overlap.
