Drive Home
I am going to try to smuggle some of the latex brush-on stuff in my checked baggage, and install at the dealer before I depart. Will try for an oil change. The car is going to detailer and xpel installer the sunday I get back, and they are hoping to have back in time for a COTA event. I know, I really should change transmission and engine oil, but it will be just a session or two, I'll use another car for most of the weekend.
Here was my experience with local dealers
#1 - Most local to me said that I would need to have purchased at least 10 cars from them to even have a shot at a GT car. The tragedy is that this is a chicken and egg problem, I'm only interested in GT cars. They are very small volume dealer, and the Austin area is where Texans retire...
#2 - I was on a list for nearly 2 years for an RS, was finally told I didn't do enough business with them to get one, so switched to a GT4 - and got frustrated as they sold marked-up GT4s out the side door without asking their customers in line.
so I bought someone's allocation from a dealer who brings credibility back to my experience with Porsche....and I get a nice vacation to boot.
By the way, WTF about #1? 10 cars?! Insane...that oil money has got those dealers spoiled.
Well, the trip is almost over. Car has exceeded my expectations as a GT car. It covers miles effortlessly while being playful.
I followed the AP break-in method, which meant by the time I hit the Tail of the Dragon, I could get into the 6K range, which was heavenly.
The car is a stripper, except for LWBS and dimming mirrors. Let me tell you the mirrors were worth as much as PCCBs when driving at night on the interstates. When I finally figured out how to turn them on that is....you actually have to activate them - there is a button on the mirror - duh. The manual HVAC was fine. My wife got in the car in Nashville, and I mentioned the fact that we didn't have the fancy dual zone controls, and she snorted "why would you need those in a track car...". Audio system was much better than I thought...better than any Bose I've had in memory...but interior noise really made it work hard to be heard. Seats were totally comfortable for both wife and I. Hard to get in and out, but I have no aches after 25 hours of driving .
Anyone making the trip from NY to Texas:
- Just drive the tail of the dragon, and if you can make the time, do it 3 times. I made the mistake of trying to sight see in the Blue Ridge mountains....bad choice. I wasted a couple hours, precious time that could have been used to drive the tail a couple more times.
- Somehow I had zero traffic on the tail, must have been the Thursday morning....in any case, no traffic was a lot of fun.
- The highway section in pink below was amazing (Ozarks) - one of the most scenic drives I've been on in the US - wonderful, and plenty twisty:
