Why do the longer studs get those fancy yellow mesh jackets?

Also, anybody happen to know the correct socket size for the 12-point nuts?

Please mind my ignorance, but why are these studs necessary vs the stock ones?
Are they stronger, or are the stock ones single use only?
Just wondering.

The stock setup uses bolts that come out of the uprights. So, when they are loosened to remove the caliper (necessary for pad changes) you have a difficult time aligning the holes to reinstall. More importantly, the aluminum threads in the uprights are fragile and easily stripped.

This kit replaces the bolts with studs and nuts. The studs are only installed once and provide a fool-proof guide for installing the calipers and will preserve the upright's mounting threads.

Makes pad/rotor changes easier and puts less strain on the parts (it's not uncommon to have to buy new/expensive parts otherwise, when the threads become stripped).

The black ones are PMNA Cup studs (for the front). The longer ones are stainless steel and I guess it's just for extra protection.

The outer diameter is 12 mm. I may have to pick up a socket that will work with these.

It's also worth having some nice torque wrenches for this sort of thing (Stahlwille from Germany my favorite, but pricey). Cheap Chinese ones will work too (but I'd prefer Home Depot over Harbor Freight, for instance).

The studs get inserted at only 5 ft-lbs, the nuts at 54 ft-lbs, and the wheels' lug bolts at a very high 118 ft-lbs.

It's typical that one would need at least two wrenches to be accurate over this range of values...

Thanks! Yeah, I've got one of those Craftsman Max Axess (pass-through) universal socket sets with a 3/8" drive ratchet, and an adapter to allow me to use that ratchet with standard square-drive sockets/bits, but I don't have an adapter to use those sockets with a standard square-drive driver (not sure one exists), which means I can't use them with a torque wrench, so I may have to tool up as well.

OP, it might be worthwhile to put the link to the group buy in Post #1 of this thread for visibility so people don't have to find it partway through these posts. I actually missed the link in your post the first time I checked in on this thread after you'd put it up.

Can't answer this one, I'm afraid. Maybe e-mail Ira at Tarret and ask him.

You should create a thread in the 991 GT3 forum to help ensure the group buy meets the maximum discount. Probably some more buyers on that side that would be interested.
