The newer version allow you to use an aux mic which is the way to go
I bought a POS knock off camera call Geek Pro for the back of the car and although the Video is magenta in color and not nearly as good as go pro the sound is way better ( go figure )

Sadly although the video is great on the Go Pro the sound is just awful
The newer version allow you to use an aux mic which is the way to go

... That said, I haven't really found any external mic that does a very good job hiding wind noise.

I'm not sure which version you're talking about, but you've been able to use an external mic for a while now. Since at *LEAST* GoPro 4, but I think even back to version 2 or so.

Its the Go Pro Hero HD ( like the 2 version )
I know they have an external mic out now and that would be great to have
