Engine fan failure from debris
My 2016 GT4 is new to me; it's been on track a lot for 6 years. PIWIS scan said there's an engine fan failure, so I took it to the dealer. The dealer reports both fans were fouled by tire and track debris, which blew the fuses. They cleaned everything and tested, but the fans were still wonky. New ones are being installed.
Anyone else experience this? Anyone place screens over the intakes?

Sorry to hear about your issue. Even though I don't track, I installed Zunsport side intake screens...I think they cost about $120. They installed pretty easily...even for me. I believe they've kept out leaves and other road debris, as I've had to remove some stuff at times from the grilles.

Very common I hear. After every track weekend or event, use a vacuum nozzle that reaches in there and clean the intakes out. No failures here yet, over 30 events the past 3 years,.

One of my fans locked up after my first track day. I did a code scan trying to troubleshoot another issue and saw the “fan stalled” code. I was able to remove the chunk of rubber and get it working again, but I bought a $4 roll of Gutter Guard plastic screen and installed it behind each side scoop. So far, so good.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Your troubles are the exact reason we created our side intake grille screens for the 981 and 718 models (base, S, GTS, GTS 4.0 and GT4). You can take a look at them here. We try to keep an OEM look by placing them behind the trim and bodywork.

Any directions for a 2016 Cayman 981 GT4? Radiator Grill Store. Also, does anyone know if the mesh size is similar between the two vendors?

The Zunsports just snap in, and supposedly just snap out, although I've never tried to remove them. The mesh size looks similar to me, but that's just subjective. Actual measurements may prove differently...

I used this. It was a bit unnerving for me to peel off body panels, but it all went back together. https://www.manthey-racing.de/Instal...take_grids.pdf

I bought a roll of generic aluminum mesh, created a cardboard template, cut and bent to shape. Popped the intake surround out, slid the mesh in with a central bend around the vane, and snapped the surround back in. Easy peasy. Mesh: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B08PBKYWJ1

Was it difficult to remove the door sills from your GT4?
Thanks

Not difficult. I was just concerned about breaking off locking tabs, etc. Now that I’ve done it once, it’s no big deal. I’ve turned wrenches for 50 years, but never done much body work.
