Default how does a scratch affect value ?

a buddy found a nice GT4 perfect cond low option with LWB 9500 mi that he wants to buy . seller wants 87 the car is perfect except for a 5" scratch on the lower rear bumper its been touched up and doesn't jump out at you .. the owner doesn't want to have the bumper repainted because of passably not matching . the touch up could be better, maybe 500 for a spot repair. Would you still buy the car? How much do you think it will affect the value . I told him its not a big deal as there is no sheet metal involved only a scratch on the bumper.. carl

If it were on the bumper I’d buy it. It’s hard to detect a well painter matched bumper and often times oem bumpers don’t match at delivery. Maybe take a grand off worst case?

As a former car broker, and one who has been around a few car lots in my days, I can tell you that about 80% of used cars at reputable dealers have had their bumpers touched up or painted. Very common. It should not effect the value. Is the carfax clean? If not, that will definitely effect value.

He checked the carfax and its clean. The owner said someone did it when the car was parked . otherwise the car is cosmetically flawless. carl

What color? Some are more difficult to match.

If everything else checks out I would not let it bother me especially since it doesn’t “scream at you”. Not sure I’d fix it. More potential downside repairing a minor scratch. If he’s gonna drive and enjoy it - leave the scratch and forget it

I agree that it’s not a significant issue if the deal is right, but it’s worth pointing out and seeing if the seller would do something. I personally would always fix it, and budget for the repair accordingly, but maybe it doesn’t bother your friend. I’m also not concerned with a good (ideally Porsche Approved collision center) body shop matching any of Porsche’s factory colors.

The one thing i want to mention is that if that scratch takes even a little bit of the bumper material away, the PACC is going to want to replace the entire bumper (and justifiably so). Been there a couple of times and it ends up as a $6k repair.

Carl,

A scratch on the bumper which is not part of the metal should be easily fixed by a mobile painter. Almost all car dealerships have one. Most do good work and most of the time, you can’t even tell it was done. To fix that size of a scratch, the mobile guy would have to paint part, not all, of the bumper to cover the defect. Should not effect value. I would say the cost to do this is around $250 around where I hail from. Not sure about your area.

If your so inclined, you could negotiate that repair as part of the deal. I wouldn’t let it hold you back from getting the car if you really want it. For me though, I would want it fixed before I took delivery.
