The $400 dealer oil change and GT4 wheel fitment...
So I got my $400 dealer oil change today and watched the whole process. This is a dealer I worked at back in the day and I still know some of the folks down there, including the tech. Not much different than a standard oil change on a Toyota so hard to justify the cost, but I like the idea of someone I trust handling the service and taking a look around. Took time to give me the lay of the land down under and that alone was worth the price of admission.
Was finally able to see how much clearance there is between the GT4 wheels and the strut at the rear of a 981 Spyder. Not much. Probably 4-6mm. I tried to get pics but it's hard to get the proper perspective without using an object for reference but I gave it a try.
Dealer is contacting PCNA regarding the windshield goo situation. I hadn't look it over closely in a while and I've got massive amounts of spooge coming from all sides. Hopefully a new factory windshield is in my future.

$400 is pretty painful until you see the replacement cost for the engine. I always gasp at the oil change price and then realize it's $20k should the engine blow up. If $400 keeps them from having reason to deny a warranty claim I'm OK with it for now.

It cost me $12 for the filter, $50 for the Oil, another $3 for the Crush washer and $10 for a new Oil Drain Plug. So for roughly $75, I do my own oil changes and have a comfort level it was done meticulously.
$400 dollars is pretty hard to swallow, in my opinion.

That dealer stamp on the service booklet makes it worth it.

Add to that the potential value that could come from being able to prove a correct oil change was done at the right time and it all adds up to I've thrown away a stupider $400 in my lifetime. Many times. Plus, in my instance, I got to hang around the shop and talk cars, dealers, dealer politics, politics and travel with old friends and it was actually a pretty good time. Do I wish it was $150? Sure.

Rip off for sure, but I always make a huge mess thanks to our stupid upside down canister not being able to easily squeeze between the cross members, so there's that. Guess I should try the plastic bag method I've seen on here. My top-drain Audi is better, using a vacuum tool. No mess.

LN Engineering sells a spin on oil filter adapter that uses $15 oil filters you can by from several sources. Every time I change my oil I think about buying the kit. Seems like it's about $140. I haven't heard from a 981 owner that can describe if it's actually easier to do the filter change so that's why I guess I procrastinate. The guy that bought my GT4 said he had one on his 987 car an swore by it.

My dealer quoted me $500 for an oil change.

Yep, I have seen it. The problem is that they recommend running a different racing type filter for track driving since the small $15 filters restrict flow and have no bypass. I really don't want to have to mess with multiple types of oil filter depending on my driving, or cleaning out a reusable metal/metal filter. If I got 20 days a year in like I'd like, maybe, but not at my current track allotment.

If they would do at least a clean job, I would say ok, but even for 400 Dollars they gave me my car back with oil all over the underbody. After I brought the car back to check if there was something wrong, they just said, hmm the mechanic hadn't cleaned properly. No apologies or anything, just took the car in to clean it and gave it back to me. As it was normal for me to waste 3 hours to get in out of the dealership to have them clean up their mess. BTW, it is still not completely clean!!! Because they have a fancy shop, dosen't mean they deliver always quality! I have learned my lesson, there is zero reason for me to go to a dealership agin for an oil change. I have an independent certified porsche mechanic, who does the job for 200 dollars (including tax) and he does a fantastic job and I can be with him while he is doing the job.
