S2000
#2
I’ve been researching S2000s for a while and it’s amazing how fast a track prepped S2k with stock motor can be. Then if you add a supercharger it will compete with just about anything out there. Laguna Seca times down in the 1:32s! What’s your take on the S2000? Is yours a street or track car?

The key with S2000 is enjoy it for what it is, upgrade brakes, suspension, maybe aero - but don't go too crazy or you will end up with a very expensive and unreliable car.
I miss it for its underdog character, but quality wise the Porsche is 1000x better.

The people that get away with it just don't track that often IMO.

Im actually not sure how unique it is to S2K, but in my experience of going to track days, any car thats gone to forced induction is going to have issues. With the S2K the main prob is the diff, but I also had a lot of transmission issues, cooling issues, engine harmonics causing things to break apart. You throw money at the problem to fix something then something else breaks, etc. etc.

Thanks for sharing guys. Point taken on running a SC on track. I do have SOS nearby so if I ever get serious about going this route I’d have to stop by and hear their thoughts. Pkh, I found your thread on s2ki and man, you went through a lot! The list of mods you had going was impressive. Too bad it didn’t work out.

I'd say better would be to buy a used Cayman or M2 and you will have a car that is in the same range of speed and will hold its value unlike a project car where you are just burning money. Then again, the project aspect was a lot of fun!

I watched a team in our endurance racing league, WRL, swap in a 6-cylinder from a honda odyssey overnight into their s2000 that they bought on craigslist after some kind of issue with the stock motor. That was last season and it is till going today! Sounds really nice, much faster than the other s2000s in the league. Though to me the allure of the OEM 4 cylinder is reving to the 8k+ redline.
I have actually never driven one, but it seems a lot like a miata with some more power and weight...I think I would like that very much on a track.

The swap that has me the most interested ATM is Ecotec Miatas... know a local guy who endurance races his, quite reliable. 200hp in a 2100lbs car.
Moral of the story: NA for the win.

+1 for the s2000, esp AP1. That 9k is addictive. Only improvements to the drivetrain would be tune (to wake up mid-range a little) and shorter gears (ap2 tranny or 4.3/4.4 final drive). spend the rest on tires, pads, suspension and aero and you have a fun, reliable track car.
