We're headed to Switzerland for holiday and will drive right by Stuttgart on the way there. My wife has agreed to indulge me with a stop @ Porsche museum. A couple of questions for anyone who's been there:

1. While there I'm hoping to have a chance to see a wide variety of porsche colors "in the flesh." Any recommendations of where to find the largest selection?
2. Any great places to grab lunch with the family while in Stuttgart?

If you can get a reservation for the Factory Tour.... you'll see an amazing selection of cars being built on the assembly line. It's a tough ticket to get, so try to reserve early. Like now. factorytours@porsche.de or werksfuehrungen@porsche.de

Otherwise you should be able to see the museum without a reservation and there you'll see old and new, normal and weird.... and just being in that area will expose you to cars on the street and on their way out of the factory.

Here is my favorite that unfolded before my eyes at the top of the escalator in the museum. I'm getting a PTS 6mt GT3 in Oak Green metallic and this is the first time I'd see that color on a car in real life.

Not sure when you are visiting but I found the factory closed at Christmas time. We went to the museum on a day trip from Vienna. Many cool cars there.

Strongly suggest you consider lunch right there at the Porsche Museum cafe on the ground floor just to the left of the check-in counter. Food there is superb and the prices are more than reasonable. Service is excellent but there may be a bit of a wait to be seated. It's worth it. If you need to "kill time" then just walk across the street to the Porsche dealership and shop the extensive/full line of Porsche branded merchandise on display. The Porsche Museum gift shop is also worth browsing. Many standard items of course but some of the items there, particularly books, are unique and you're not likely to see advertised or made available anywhere else.

The factory tour is nice if you can get one booked (mine came free with my European Delivery). It really made me have another level of appreciation for the brand, which I didn't think was possible. I don't think all tours are created equal, but I got to see the infamous color wall of PTS swaths.

The museum is a smattering of everything Porsche new and old, with many race cars and rare oddities thrown about. They usually rotate a featured exhibit - mine was the 959 when I was there. I got there later than anticipated and they were closing soon. Silver lining is I had the entire place to myself and my pics look like press shots! Just to say I did, we booked a reservation at Christophorous restaurant. For the sense of occasion alone I would recommend it - the window stares onto the museum floor even after its closed, there are Porsche things everywhere, and I got a kick out of the menu being made out of interior leather. The food was pricey and IMO it was just okay (I remember enjoying my steak at the Pistenklause by the Nurburgring more than my dinner there) but again, I'm glad I went just because of what it is. Oh, they also have a hidden cigar bar in the back that has Behikes.

I would definitely take the time to see the Mercedes museum in Stuttgart since you are there.

I've done this twice... once from Berlin and another time in Switzerland. They have a nice selection of European cities where you can pick one up.

....didn't know about the hidden cigar spot though....

If you are a PCA member both places give you a discount on merchandise purchases; 15% when I was there on my ED.

I'll be in Stuttgart in late September during Oktoberfest (and Munich....) Any suggestions on stuff to do in Stuttgart around that time frame? I reached out re factory tours but they only have 1 slot left and our group is 4. We will probably go to the museum anyway.

 

 

 

Thx all for the feedback. Museum was very impressive. The 917 is my favorite P-car ever (still have my Hot Wheels version on my desk), and there were three on display. We did not have time to hit Mercedes.

We will travel back from CH (Wengen) end of the week. Need to be back in AMS early Sat evening. Will set another post here and in GT3 forum seeking recommendations for a visit to Nurburgring Sat morning, and a place nearby to stay Friday night.
