6 Cars to Drive While Waiting for the Porsche 911 Bubble to Burst

How about any water cooled 911? Technically, they are better than any air cooled car, yet the values keep going down with no limit in sight (997 GT3 being one exception). Unless you are a moneyed collector, forget the 993 and move on.

There are three Boxsters on CL in my area right now for $5k or less. The lowest being advertised at $3400. The $5k one even mentions regular service, records and even mentions the IMSB is upgraded. I recently bought a 996 C2 Cab, so I'm not investigating those further. I have a 7-year old, so it is good to be able to shoe-horn him into the back of the 911 for short trips and we can all enjoy the car together. If I were single, I'd instantly buy a Boxster as a play car. If these prices continue, I still might at some point.
I always thought the air cooled 911's are wicked cool cars. I've been a fan of them since my dad bought one from my uncle when we were living in Germany in the 70's. But, this is the 21st century and there is a reason why Porsche moved on to water cooled cars... that's good enough for me to move on, too. Plus, living in Florida I absolutely MUST have A/C that works.

If you're planning on buying a 911 with Bosch Jetronic, a 944 has a very similar system (in fact most of the parts are interchangeable). Good learning platform for troubleshooting dated EFI and ignition systems.

This is true, and it baffles me how I can still buy a pretty decent, well maintained 944na for under 5k around here. I would almost always prefer my 911 to the 944 for sporting drives, but 944s are still a ton of car for the money nevertheless.

I think the author was being a little harsh about 924
I think the author was being a little harsh about the 924 in the 944 segment of this article. The late model 924S is equal to any early 944 in almost every respect.

1) Really nice with a price that will buy you a 944
2) $1000 or less and not even worth that.
