Question 2009+ Cayman S or 997.1 C2S?

Hello. New to Porsche (hopefully) and to Rennlist. I wanted to reach out to the community to get some advice on a possible purchase. My budget is around $35k. I'm thinking a 2009 or later Cayman S, or possibly a 997 C2S (probably 05-06 given the budget). both absolutely manual.

I haven't seen very many 2009-2011 Cayman S's out there -- assuming because they didn't sell as many those years. the ones I have seen are pretty low miliage, or low enough to put it well out of my price range. There are a good amount of 2007-2008's, but I much prefer the interior of the gen II and the HP bump, no IMS, etc. (although I understand that is overblown, but again...new to all this).

Then there's the possibility of a 997 C2S. This is appealing because it's a 911 and I never would have thought I could afford one. I've seen a few 2005's and 2006's out there with somewhere between 55k-80k on them. buying a 10 year old car with 60k+ on it seems like a bad idea for a guy that doesn't work on his own cars?. I'm totally prepared for the higher service and maintenance costs of a Porsche vs. my Mazdaspeed3, but I of course want something as reliable as possible. and although I have no plans to re-sell, obviously I'd prefer something that could hold it's value ok if I do plan to move it in a couple years. also, the aftermarket warranty thing is appealing in this case, but I can't imagine I'll be able to afford it.

This car would be my only car, a daily driver (in Los Angeles), although I put well under 10k a year on my cars. I love the way Porsche's drive (I have spent time in a 997 GT2, and 997 C2S) and although I like the way the 987's look, I LOVE the look of the 997 C2S.

Any advice on the reality of either of these, your opinions on the choices, reliability, fun etc...would be much appreciated. thank you!

The Cayman is a great car, but for me, there's nothing like a 911. I love my 2005 Carrera. It's not even all that fast compared to some cars on the road but the way it drives is pure bliss to me.

I don't know how much you've looked, but I think your estimate for a nice '05-'06 Carrera S might be a little low. Even for a one with 60k miles on it. If you were interested in a non S model with 60k you'll find them all day long at that price.

Good luck on your search! I hope you find what you want!

baymond52, I really appreciate the response. I'm definitely leaning that way, especially because the Cayman S market actually seems pretty high (vs. base cayman anyway). I've seen a lot of used 2006-2008 Cayman S's in the $32k-$40k range, which doesn't seem worth it when compared to an only slightly older 911.

You're right that there aren't too many C2S's out there for ~$35k, but i've seen a few, usually pretty high mileage of course, 60k-80k. Totally not opposed to a base C2 though, if I come across the right one.

Has your 2005 been pretty reliable? is it your daily driver?

again, thank you for your help!
