Question Thinking of getting a 944

Hi i am looking in to buying a 944 turbo soon and i wanted to ask if it was even a good idea to get this car to drive it a lot. I am the guy the wants to drive the cars and not let them sit some where. so i ask pros and cons of getting a 85 951. And what to look for how many miles is to many those kind of things.
Thanks all

Bought my first 944 (an '84 n/a) in 2005, drove it almost 7 days a week for 5 years. Bought my second 944 4 years ago (a '90 S2) and drove it everyday for 3 years with no issues either. Before buying my first 944, someone who I greatly respect within the vintage Porsche world did advise me that "if I was crazy enough to buy one as a daily commuter, then at least try to find a clean n/a car" ...of coarse there might be a few that will disagree with this advice but I think it did turn out to be fairly relevant to my carefree daily driving for 8+ years. It will be interesting to read the comments here. Cheers

Well I guess there's not a lot of daily 944 folks out there, but I can say from experience that if you find a maintained and unabused car out there you'll really enjoy the drive through summer and winter. Great handling in the snow and great car to play with in the summer. Although they're galvanized, I still did the Rust Check on them as I didn't want to add any rust to the eventual resale values ..and they are susceptible like any car to rust in various areas where salt will accumulate. I believe that my friend who commented about finding an n/a car was concerned about the cost of overhauling an old turbo so I simply avoided that scenario all together. I would only suggest that you make sure the 944 is maintained by a tech who is well versed in 944 drivetrains. Timing belt, rollers, balance shafts, water pump etc. need to be inspected right after you pick one up regardless of previous owner's claimed history. Now through February is a good time to start looking as the springtime is the worst for prices. It's becoming evident that good 944s have been increasing in market value for the past 3+ years. Last year (after almost 2 months of searching) I couldn't find a unmolested 944 anywhere in Ontario for under $11,000. 5 years ago, there were a tonne of really nice 944s on the net for $5-$8,000. Hope you find a nice one, and post it to this thread!

I have had 3x 944s, all NA. One was my daily driver until I wrecked it (tires were grippy in the dry and slicker than snail snot in the wet). My DD was great and I never had an issue with it.

I always wanted a Turbo but unfortunately if a 944 has any major issues it often isn't cost-effective to repair them and they go to the junkyard or get sold off cheap to be someone else's problem. The 944 Turbo can be much more expensive a repair issue than the NA 944s.
