im 99% sure that the cayenne is 999. why? well i know ive read it in some articicles some where, and i remember seeing it on rennlist (now that 999 was taken what would be next in the internal number designation or somthing along those lines what the question that was asked), and i remember it so well because of the cheesey jokes i would make up.
"the posrche cayenne has the # 999... what does nein nein nein mean in german? no no no"
"cayenne is 999.. upside down thats 666... this is a sign that a porsche suv is truly the work of saitan!" and crazy **** like that. did i mean it? heck no, no the pepper is cool, i just had to crack on it for the sake of making fun of the new model you know, out of love i guess.
but thats how i remembered it was 999.

here is some proof, see what this web site calls it? http://www.dpb-online.com/modules/classed/index.php

maybe we should ask Phil Raby (chief editor of 911 and porsche world), who frequently posts on the 964 board to help us out a bit here with the debate. maybe he and his archives can help fill in some blanks here.

The 901 is what the 911 was first called, but a lawsuit made them change it to the 911 - some other car maker had a patent on car model numbers that were 3 digits with a 0 in the middle. A handful of 901 marked cars got out - 34 or 37 IIRC. Saw one at the Peterson Auto Museum when they had the "Cars and Guitars of Rock n Roll" - I was there to see Janis Joplin's 356.

It was Peugot that had the 901 and there was no lawsuit involved - simply an agreement.

Someone at flat-6.net said the Carrera GT is the 980. I forget who said it and where they heard this but I believed it.

I found it... Again this is just what someone on the internet said. I cannot confirm it.

Hey Don from Cape Cod,

Here's one for your list - the 942: http://www.flat-6.net/view.php?model...=942&tab=oview

The project number, auftragsnummer is found in the VIN. What is a Cayenne VIN. Project number 955 is from around the mid 80s. Part number 955 is something different again. 9X5 part numbers are allocated to parts which are not designed or built by Porsche.
Ciao,
Adrian
