To me the car is only what the driver makes of it, so if you enjoy it, rock on!

But to clarify some things; water-cooling, V8's and mid-engines were all used in the car before 1998. A V8 911 came very close to production in the late eighties, but was canned only due to financial reasons. Watercooling was used in the 80s and 90s (no not on all cars, I know).

That's my opinion. Nice to have a thread where everyone can give their opinion without getting in a fight. But if you enjoy your car, who's to argue?

Take care!

I ran into my Father's friend over the weekend. He's 72yrs old and an old school German that was born and raised in Frankfurt. I always talk Porsche w/ him, obviously because of his Nationality and because he has owned a few of them himself. He wasn't aware of my Targa purchase and I showed him a pic on my phone. Out of the blue, he says in his German accent, "Now that's a real Porsche". It's interesting to hear the many takes on this subject here and in the Porsche world in general.

I tend to think of the 993 as the most stylish and what a Porsche is of the bunch and it is the best of the breed. It looks the part and it works better.

But the factory dropped the 911 code in 1989, so while the 964 and the 993 have the name and the feel they arent a true 911 designation.

For me only "the Porsche look " is a 930 or up to the 1994 Turbo Carrera. In the 930 has to Guards Red and the Turbo Carrera in the Pearlessence white color. Stirs the Porsche blood.
Nor is the 930 a true 911, it's a ...930.

Hah! How much of a religious purist do you claim to be? Anybody dedicated only to the SWB 1965-1968 models? You know, the ones with lead weights bolted to the front bumper. All downhill from there, right?

My view: a 911 is a 2+2 Porsche with a 6 cylinder boxer engine in the tail, two standing headlamps up front, and the distinctive profile. It provides driver engagement, with performance more important than comfort. And it also provides distinctive dynamics. The factory or well-connected teams race derivatives on the international stage. Lots of civilians recognize a 911, and lots of teen boys (and some girls) still want one.

BTW, if you want to argue Porsche purism, gather up the "only true Porsche is the 356" gang.
