Post Need Help Importing From Canada

Hello,

I am considering the purchase of a 94 Porsche 968 located in Canada. I will bring the car to the states and register it in South Dakota. The car is a US/Canada car...it has the DOT stickers.

I understand there is paper work required for eliminating the taxes charged by Canada. Anyone know what the papers are and where I can get them?

Also, I understand that a 2.5% tax is charged by the US (I think, but not sure). When and where do I pay the tax?

Is there other paper work required for the states?

I was told that the speedo would need to be changed, is this correct?

Any help would be appreciated.

If you buy the car from an individual nobody will ask you for taxes. If you buy from a dealer they should know the procedure. If they don't know, the best is if you contact revenue Canada directly

I think that you have to pay the 2.5 % duty and hour home state tax as well.

Here are general information from customs USA:

And here are more specific information. You should contact one of the registered importers who will do the import for you as you cannot do it privately. They should have all the information required.

Good luck
