I only just today decided that I might like to own a Porsche. I know very little about the cars, so bare with me, but I thought I'd start with the above question.
Thanks for any help,

A 964 is a 911, 964 relates to the body style. The 964 style started with the 1989 C4 Coupe and is the body style for all variations of 911s from 1990 until 1994. In 1995 the body style changed to the 993 style through 1998. The 993 is last of the air cooled 911s. Before the 964 was the 911 Carrera from 1984 to 1989 and the SC before that. Other differences are the engines:
SC: 3.0 liter
Carrera: 3.2
964: 3.6
993: 3.6
SC: 3.0 liter
Carrera: 3.2
964: 3.6
993: 3.6

Hey Paninaro... welcome to the forums. One off the topic question. Your user name "Paninaro"... this is the first time I've seen this word outside of my CD collection. Did you take your name from the song, or the actual Italian word?

Aha, I thought I spotted another fan
Yes a huge one... I have over 100 of their CDs. If you go to any of the forums like Sky and Host my user name is "Zog" (from "Don Juan").
