Just turned 34!

Well I would like to offer to the board a slightly different view of speed on public roards.

My job takes me most of the time away from home for a considerable amount of time. So I have been fortunate to live in a few European countries (presently in France) and speed there on the sreets is treated differently. One of the countries I have lived in is Germany with its glorious Autobahns. For a couple of years I used to wake up and take the Autobahn to work which was literally less than half a mile from my doorstep. So instead of coffee I had my dose of adrenaline to wake me up at 140+ mph every day!
I have also been very fortunate to do this with various different cars from Mercs to Alfas, BMW's as all were available for rent at my local Hertz/Avis place. It was exilarating everytime. Did I feel safe doing it? Yes. Why? Because of DRIVERS EDUCATION. In my book silly drivers cause the majority of the accidents not the speed limits... In order for a German to take his/her drivers licence it takes them anywhere from 4-6 months! It is so difficult that very few people get it with the first try! They cover everything from Mechanics to Ice, high speed driving you name it! I got mine within an hour at the parking lot of the DMV in Boca Raton FL... You can even see how well behaved they are on the streets. I would agree that in town it is silly if not outright stupid to street race. But on the freeways I think us the drivers make it safe or not to "speed". Personally I do not speed when I'm back home just the thought of the usual yahoo driving his beblemoth truck on my baby is enough to just push backwards the cruise control lever...

Dont you all think that SOMETHING has to be done about the drivers ed of the drivers in this country??? Maybe this way we can enjoy better our cars the way there were meant to be enjoyeed and some precious lives can be saved every day...Everyone is talking about the wars around the planet but noone is mentioning the carnage of our streets!
Well...just a thought!

Thumbs up

Just hit 40. That's 40 Canadian years though. That is equal to about 27 American years or 27 years Fahrenheit. Got the 911 just before my 39th birthday. Sort of "preventative meds" for mid life crisis. Not much of a street racer but I love the twisties.

I'm 42, and an avid car enthusiast.

I tried many of the other little "forums" out there in the Net and it seems that every "teenie bopper" likes to hang out in them. I got tired of the prattle on how great some ACME Roadster was and how fast the 1/4-mile times were after they put another $5K - $20K of aftermarket stuff into them. Most seem to believe every word that the rag-mag's talk about.
I have found that this forum is more real, or at least the members are here to discuss something. Not see if they can make a dozen or a hundred posts a week and insult each other with foul language.

I hope I can contribute to this group. My background as a motorcycle and auto mechanic should be helpful. I also used to race alittle. But, my background in cars is my passion:
1967 Mustang
1968 AMC Javelin (2 actually)
1968 Plymouth Satellite
1968 Dodge Charger (set up for 1/4-mile)
1970 Dodge Coronet
1970 AMC AMX (390 w/4-spd)

This is just an example of past cars, wish I had kept the Javeling and AMX...oh well (SIGH)

My past Porsches have included a 914, 924 (SCCA racing a couple of times), 944 and now I only have the 928.

56. That is why I am a "senior user*. Grew up on Porsches... My Dad had a Porsche dealership in the 50's in Bakersfield California, where I first got exposed to 356's... I was really nuts later about the Super 90... Unfortunately, in those bygone days they did not have speed yellow...

DJF, I couldn't agree with you more. But until the Auto Manufacturers and the Oil companies, as well as the insurance companies, states (bridge and tunnel tolls) and all other groups that profit off of motorists, decide that human life is more important than profit, we are going to see idiots being handed licenses, and more needless deaths and injuries on public roadways. From what I understand, and correct me if I'm wrong, the German government subsidizes a lot of the roadways and public areas of the country. So they have more sway over who gets to use them than the lobbyists and the capitalist institutions.

I wish there were some way to make the tests harder, but with all of the money being made over driving, I don't think we'll see it any time soon. America will continue to appeal to the lowest commond denominator, at least in the forseeable future.

Sorry for the rant, I just feel particularly strongly about this subject (many encounters with people who have no business on the road, and two close encounters with death from idiot cab drivers in NYC) I'll go calm down now.

JGordon,

I'm glad I'm not alone on this board beleiving this...In October I had a yahoo crushing on the rear bumber of my M3 and I was alone waiting on a traffic light on a three lane road...

I'm not sure what is the German government doing, but even here in France that I'm presently stationed I see a recent campaing on TV, Radio and billboard about keeping a safe distance at speed from the car in front...Drivers Ed at its best...When is the last time you saw an add for safe driving(besides drinking)in our home? French drivers who treat the gas pedal like the head of a snake that they try to kill on the freeways, are equally very well behaved drivers. Although the speed limit is 130KPH on the freeways which I must say are the best I have ever seen, French drivers do more like 180-200 (110-120mph) safely! They move to the left lane only when passing and they even have the left indicator on to indicate this! Then you see them promptly returning to the right lane... What is even more amazing is that they do these speeds not with cars like ours...you will see a diesel Renault Megane Mini Van doing 110-115mph and you know this is the FINAL speed of their car!!! I had posted a short time ago on the 993 board pics of me doing around 125mph and a 993 flying past me cruising at around 140-150mph... I have here for my transportation a little Peugeot 206 S16 which fortunately is a little screamer ,the sports model of the 206 complete with a great suspension, 16 inch tyres with low profile Michellin Pilots great breaks and it behaves like a go cart. Its final speed which I have explored many times is 130mph and I know if I was back home I would not even dream about doing this!!! And this is not because of the cops but because of the drivers. Also what helps is as I mentioned before these incredible autoroutes...I cannot have enough of them! The asphalt is so smooth and so perfect that every time I'm on them I'm in awe. I bet they could run a Grand Prix on them easily... I really do not know what they do to make them like that, besides being so smooth the drainage is incredible too. On my way to Paris on A5 I was doing 100+ in the rain! It was pooring rain, yet you could hardly see any spray from the cars ahead, the road seemed totally dry!!!
Sorry for my ranting and raving...Maybe because I cannot stop drouling around the local 993's and the other porsches and I keep on dreaming I have my baby here to drive, It just gets to me why we cannot do the same and better??? The good ol US ,the great country that it is could use some lessons from the old country and maybe we could all be safer and enjoy our cars they way they were meant to be enjoyed..Thank God for the person who invented DE's!!!

PS. One thing I find great and I have picked up from the Frenchies is that anytime there is a sudden stop on the freeway, they use their big red button on the dash, so with both the indicators flashing you know they are stopping hard for something ahead...So you are warned as a driver who comes at them at high speed.. I cannot stress how great this is!!! On my last visit at home while on the freeway you know the usual situation you are doing 70 and all of a sudden you come to the tail end of a traffic jam and you literally have to break hard especially in the land of Texas where all the cars are trucks and I do not see 100 feet in front of me, I used my buzzers as i realized that the Chevy beblemoth ahead was hard on his breaks to stop...I was looking worried on my rear view mirror only to see that the car behind me caught on my signal and used his buzzers too!!!!!
As the traffic flowed and we picked up speed several miles down the beltway 8 again the same story. Only this time the car who was behind me was ahead and I saw him using them again!!! To my amazement I saw another car on the lane next to him doing the same!!!!!!

So its a catcy little thing...
Now you know when you see a pretty little red 993 flashing its buzzers on a traffic jam...its me!!!

21...A few years ago I would sit out infront of my local 7-11 looking to pick up races with Hondas driving my built up 91 GTI. I talked alot of **** in high school and was under the idea that I own a car to impress others. Now I've grown up into much more of a driving for my pleasure.

I still do some street racing. I dont go trolling for a stoplight drag, but I'm not one to turn one down. I'm not so much afraid of my driving, I'm afraid of the other guy in the next lane. I know my limits fairly well. I know what I cna and cant pull off in my car and dont realy want to press my luck with those limits off the track.

The only real bragging I do with when picking up girls. "what hobbies do you have?" "Well I do some entry level racing" "Oooooo"

Most of us (male or female) have had to put the "pedal to the metal" more than once.

But as you get older and wiser keeping the drivers record clean, staying out of court, keeping money in wallet instead of paying fines, and the possiblity of destroying a perfectly good automobile (and driver too!) is all that it should take.
My testestorones would demand that anyone challenging me and my ride needs to be shown how neat my tail lights look. Now, I couldn't care less. I raced cars and a motorcycle at one time or another and after destroying two perfectly good automobiles (missing a turn on a country road, and having an engine mount snap and stopping the car using a fire hydrant), the race track is the only place to go.
But...I do like to go out and let the shark breath heavily once in a while on an open stretch, but not racing! Oh, to be young again and know then what I know now!!!Personal 928 WebSite
