Default recommendations for towing vehicle

Any recommendations for a good towing vehicle for GT3 and aluminum trailer that you also think makes a reasonable daily driver? Looking at a Tundra or Titan. Currently have an Xterra, but I think the load is stressing out the engine. thanks

Recommend you do a simple search on the racing forum - much there to read.

Thank you, I have used it, and other than sparse references, no tangible information to answer my question. Any other good suggestions other than an imotican?

An Xterra is rated to tow 5k#, that's pretty marginal, as your basic load out is in the 4-4.5k# range +/-

I tow a similar rig w/ a V8 gen 4 4Runner w/ factory tow package rated for 7.3k#

any of the 1/2 or 3/4 ton V8 pickups & a few 6 cyl would be fine, there's a lot to be said for 1/2 to 3/4 ton vans too as long as they aren't going to be daily drivers.

check on the manufacturer web sites for tow ratings, a factory tow package is a big plus

I have an '01 Tundra Extra Cab V8. I have pulled my 996 on a not so lightweight car trailer and it tows well. Depending on the year, you need to be aware that some of the Tundras had tranny problems. I had to rebuild mine as the overdrive gear grenaded the transmission (and it was before I seriously towed anything).

Get a Cayenne TT/GTS. If the GT 3 breaks, you have a backup.

I love my VW Touareg TDI. Very nice DD, 400 ft lbs torque, 7700 lb tow rated. Perfect for your situation.

I believe the Xterra is fine with a GT3 and an aluminum trailer. The load doesn't stress the engine as much as it stresses the transmission. You should never leave it in O/D if the transmission is always searching for the correct gear. This will break it.

I've known no one that every stopped at an open trailer. You will accumulate extra parts and extra wheels/tires and will need an enclosed trailer.

I used to have a Titan and I towed my enclosed race trailer (dirtbikes) and the truck did not even flinch....besides the gas mileage the Titan was awesome

Toyota and Dodge both option a 4.7 liter V8. Toyota tunes theirs for 290hp and 230tq, Dodge went 230hp and 290tq.[+] Recommend that you get a Factory Tow Package as that includes bigger four wheel Disc Brakes, additional cooling for the Transmission, better gear ratio Diffs, wider Mirrors, and the 7 pin trailer plug with conversion adapters. 4wd is also a nice add-on when it absolutely, positively, must get there. Dodge Dakota is the only 'normal' size pick-up that has a V8 nowdays. Club/Extra Cab models will haul four Adults with ease. 4 Door models are the best sellers in the line-ups. Tow ratings are around 6500lbs.
