Has anyone had success selling their own p-car on Ebay or Autotrader?
success being defined as 1)selling your car, and 2)for an acceptable price
not limited to those two, but just wondering if anyone's has had success with selling online

My best success came from selling on the Rennlist. I've sold two here. I've also listed on autotrader.com, but that was in conjunction with an ad in their paper magazine. I didn't sell the car through them, but did get a fair amount of exposure. I've never sold on eBay, but I "shop" there regularly. It's typically full of cars whose owners think they're worth more than they really are. The other trick with eBay is finding the "right" buyer at the same time as you're selling. I've seen people who place an ad on rennlist and/or other site noting that the Pcar is going up for sale on eBay. Builds interest...calls attention from people in the market.
Good luck!

I bought a car on Autotrader (Diablo) and have sold cars there too. It depends on the car, I don't know about selling an expensive P car there...
I have bought some expensive stuff on e-bay (bikes) but have not sold a car there. I think they are a good concept but their search engine sucks. For example, if you are looking for a 89 Turbo, you have to read a bunch of ads you are not interested in... I browse there but it's hard to find a car there compaired to Hemmings or autotrader.
For P cars, I have had good luck with Autoweek.

Tried them all, Ebay has generated the most requests for me, but like said, the right time & the right buyer have to meet. I've posted For Sales for my currrent '02 996 on & off lately( past few months) w/ no serious buyers. I'm now giving the NY Times a shot and posted what I think is a ridiculus number. We'll see.
Florida home closing comming up soon, But if I can move it Now I'll take my lumps <img border="0" alt="[ouch]" title="" src="graemlins/c.gif" /> , so I'll see if there's any bargin hunters out there <img border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" title="" src="graemlins/bigok.gif" />
Or it's Macoroni & Cheese for a while <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

I found my 89 on autotrader online. It was the only way the PO had it listed.
I browse eBay too. I had a bad experience with that though. I don't know if I'll ever buy one through eBay. I watch that more to see how the pricing is.

I listed my 89 Carrera coupe (~40k miles) late last summer on both Rennlist and AutoTrader and got calls from both ads. I sold it in less than a month to somebody who'd seen the AutoTrader ad for what just less than the asking price.
I also bought a car on E-bay (2000 Audi S4) for what seemed like a low price - if you need to sell the car quickly that may be the way to go, but I'm sure if I sold my 911 there I wouldn't have done as well.
Whichever you pick - make sure you post at least one good picture. That's what gets the attention!

I've bot and sold several cars on Ebay, all of them Pcars. If you know the market place there is room to make a buck. If you're willing to work the market correctly and wait for the right buyer. Owners thinking their cars are worth more then reality is quite common all over the place. I get a hearty laugh out of peoples opinions of their cars sometimes. The reality is that if you want to sell your car in a short period of time, you get a lower price. I find that Ebay gets the most traffic and the greatest number hits. I am not a dealer, i work on the options floor at the PHLX. I went to the high line auction in Manhiem last week just to observe. I tried to follow as many of the Pcar auctions i could cover and prices seemed fairly well bid to me. That is considering what a fall they've taken in the past year. The 99 to 01 996's are clearly going to get hit the hardest in the near future. The few 87 to 89 carreras that went for auction garnered more interest then the 996's. The 02's held up okay but They are really doomed when the 997 comes out as well. I would never ever buy a new car again after seeing what i could get at auction. oh yea, 964's were clearly the best performance bargain and the 993's ( non turbo ) were the most coveted.

Trader220,
Very interesting and insightful observations from the auction. Clearly, all our P-cars are taking a hit but it is nice to know that some cars are holding up well.

What about Hemmings Motor News? They have lots of listings, and I did find a Porsche I wanted, just on the East Coast, so out of the question for me.

Trader220,
I agree with everything you said, but am curious how you got into the highline auction if your not a dealer? You picked up what looks like a very nice '89 turbo as well.
As far as selling on e-bay...that's how adscab911 found my car. Even though we have the same circle of friends and business contacts we wouldn't have made contact if it wasn't for e-bay. If you don't mind replying to a bunch of e-mails, e-bay will give you a lot more exposure than any other site IMO.

I have purchased a highline auto through e-Bay - waited until the auction ended w/no sale, then called the seller to strike a deal. Also have listed race cars for sale on e-Bay, and found that, when used in conjunction with links on related websites, an e-Bay auction can attract attention and generate good inquiries.

i must admit i'm more than a little nervous at selling mine on ebay. it's an '87 944 NA w/ 83k miles and in really good condition, but it appears that there a lot of beat-up 944s on ebay now and i am thinking it would be hard to get notice (despite me having some really nice pictures).
