Exclamation Anyone have ideas for a European P car meet ?

Hello all,

a couple of us have been kicking around an idea, and would like other opinions, or thoughts.

Take a look at the 'life begins at 40' thread to see the short discussion.

We are toying with the idea of trying to get a load of Rennlisters together. The original idea came from thinking about doing a major group photo shoot, but the idea has grown, so this gathering could be a track day, an evening meal, or whatever. I suggested meeting at Goodwood for a track day (has strict noise restrictions though), or Brooklands.

Graham Mitchell has suggested a more central European meet, maybe in Germany which gives a good chance for a bit of high speed driving. While this is a great idea, it may be better to start with something a little smaller and easier to organise.

So, what do you lot fancy ???
No restrictions on type of Porsche. Its a social idea, with possibly a chance for a blast.

Am I crazy ?

Anyone else got ideas ?

The more complex they are though, the more planning and longer time needed to organise it (and I'm not volunteering to sort it all out on my own!).

Cheers,
John.

Hi John,

Call me a sentimental old fool, and it's probably too late this year, but what about Le Mans? The one year that I managed to get this arranged I loved it. I even have a new tent this year!

Cheers,

David

David,

yep, I have to agree. I went in 89 (in the Caterham funnily enough) and had such a blast that I've not wanted to go back incase it spoilt my memories.
We stayed in a chateau (27 cars in total) which had a long gravel drive. We spent a fair amount of time on the Friday night doing timed sprints ! lol

I do fancy a return visit now though. Can't do this year but I do fancy joining the PCGB guys on their trip next year.

Tent ? blimey, we caught a brief sleep under the cars front wings and then went back to the fun fair to wake up

The other thing that sprang to mind was the CannonBall run, but 2k5 start money puts me off.

Maybe if we can get this skid training thing sorted somewhere that would do as a first try.

Anyone know how much it costs to hire Gaydon ?

Cheers,
John.

PCGB have arranged a 964/993 register trip to the Isle of Man on June 27th-29th. It includes a track event (at Jurby) for those who want to partake. Always fancied going to the Isle of Man, but it's too close to my wedding anniversay to claim it's NOT just another excuse to go on a car thing!

On a UK level, Goodwood circuit has interesting trackdays most weekends. Entry's free (to the paddock area not the track) and there's plenty of safe parking/space for a group photo shoot.
Should be safe enough to turn up unannounced (I've done it loads of times) at one these events for an informal meeting and the roads down to Goodwood from the Guildford area make for an excellent Saturday morning blast.

Further North, Donington makes for a good meeting point. Easy to get to as it's central, but a bit motorway bound. Again free to get in on an average track day (probably) and there's always the museum.

Anyone heard of Continental Car Tours... http://www.continentalcartours.co.uk/ apparently they arrange some cracking events at excellent prices.
How about Champagne country and a track day at Foulembray?
Reminds me of the time I went to Mercier in Epernay and as I was leaving the whole of the North Picardie Region of the French Porsche Club arrived, "most excellent"....
Proof of the Mercier event and some pics of Foulembray circuit here.... http://www.porscheboy.plus.com/mchome.html

Hi Mark,

Call me a sentimental old fool but a freebie at Goodwood sounds good. I agree with John that a simple drive, watch and photo session would be a good start.

The last time I went to Le Mans you could still sit above the pit lane with your legs dangling over the side... Jaguar won that year so it was a great event for national pride (made a change from Porsche!).

Cheers,

David

David, that would be 88 then

I'd love to do Isle of Man, but I'll be in France on the bike that week

Foulembray sounds like an interesting second trip. Not been there, but it gets good reviews from the bike guys so must be pretty good.

Goodwood for an afternoon drive, and then a spin back up the road towards Petworth makes for a good drive, and I'm sure Sidcup Steve will recall the pub we've stopped in after our track days down there. No idea what the food is like, but the beer is good ! lol

Good to see we have a few ideas building. Keep em coming guys.

Cheers,
John.

I think this would be a brilliant idea. Are we trying to get as many Rennlist UK guys as possible? If so, closer the time we could even post an 'OT' thread on each of the boards to direct people here.

Goodwood sounds cool. I think the best idea is to go for a drive somewhere in the countryside with the aim to reach a motoring related destination (maybe a car museum such as the Haynes one?). Alternatively, if anyone knows a great place for brunch that would be cool too, or even better combine the two.

Some suggestions:
- this should be a driving event, not a chatting inside a pub away from the cars one
- it would be better if we went early in the morning, makes it more exciting and special (and weeds out the non-hardcore enthusiasts IMO)
- stick to smaller roads where we can do some speed within reasonable conditions
- have a 60/70 mile round circuit (maybe more)

I agree with Riccardo,

We should get as many cars as possible. However, I would want to be careful about a drive route as this could easily degenerate into a race. The last time that I was out with a load of other 911s I almost got run off of the road by a pissed-off sierra driver who was tired of all these 911s hacking past him.

Another option for a drive-out is to visit a non-plebby seaside resort as you can park up at the front and get some good group shots.

Cheers,

David

Hi John,

They do exist though they are few and far between. If you want get away from geezers driving souped-up Fords with neon lighting and impossibly large exhausts (plus special high-treble sound systems) then you have to look for one of the ex-"genteel" locations such as Frinton which was dry until recently. Of course you would probably have more fun watching said geezers doing their banger racing around the Southend sea-front...

Cheers,

David

Okay, so how about a meet at say Dorking, drive down the A24, then A29, then pick up the A272 and head off in the general direction of Goodwood via Petworth. We could then carry on across country to Beauleau (sp?)

The Corrado car club did a run down there (Beauleau). If we let them know beforehand, and can get a guaranteed number of at least 20 (I think) we would be allowed to park inside around their show ground. You still have to pay entry, but you get the drive down there, can have a good look around or just picnic on the lawn, and then maybe come back a different route as well.
I'm sure a few of us could magic up a decent route over a few maps.

I think Rocket has a relative down that way, so maybe he can suggest a genteel seaside place for some pics near the sea too.

I like the idea of a trip to the ring too, but think we could maybe have a UK meet first, followed by that if the first one goes okay.
How about we try to organise a visit to each country ? (what am I saying ?!?)

Cheers,
John.

John W,

I second your plan for the UK drive meet. Cool, spring has hardly started and we've already got 3 meets organised!

Dates?
