Son, I live in Cambridge( Now called Facist Republic of Cambridge). I am moving next month to Beverly which is on the North Shore. You have some great advice here. There are many towns South of the city that are on the commuter rail(T). Parking safely in Boston is like trying to melt an iceberg with a warm stream of pee. Folks around here refer to there cars as either the "city car" or "the regular car". Anyway, best of luck at RISD, I went to MassArt for ID.

Cheers, James

Winchester & Lexington won't be any cheaper than Boston. Less housing + high income community + easy access to rail, subway, and bus service = $$$
That's why I lived in Medford. Average rent around $12-1500/month for one to two bedrooms, on-street parking.

Or you could just move to NH where locking the p-car is an option.

But not if you ant to work in Boston.

South shore does have commuter rail, but it is very limited. Mainly because Hinghaw doesn't want any trains going through their town. It an issue there like Forced bussing was in southie. i.e. mention it and expect a fight, regardless of what side your on.

So if you want to do south shore and train your limited to Quincy, Braintree, Weymouth and once again only a few stations and all them houses is full because they are in high demand.

North shore is probably your best bet.

Just stay away from Revere unless your second car is an IROC and your girlfriend buys hair spray by the gross.

I could name a few burbs in Detroit where that would apply! I have passed on the advice to my girlfriend (the driving force behind Boston), I think its safe to say her hopes of living around Beacon Hill are all but dashed (big sigh!)
BTW-Any good skiing/snowboarding in the vicinity??? I heard VT. has some decent runs.

One of the reasons I haven't gone back to school is that "I'm on the fence" between ID and a masters in Architecture. What has been your focus in ID? How is the job market? Would it be possible for someone like myself with an architecture backround to get some exposure in the ID field before I decide to take the plunge.

Theres plenty of good skiing and snowboarding. So I hear. Whithin two or three hours drive. Not into it myself. Thre is a place called Blue Hills just south of boston for during the week. Plenty of stuff in Maine, VT and NH.

I've been using a bit of humor. Don't let me put you off. It is a good part of the country, just has difficulties those not from around here find difficult. If your looking for a place to live. Might I recomend a visit. Really the only way. Hoever, if you give what your looking to pay in rent it could narrow done the possibilites quite a bit.

Beacon hill. No more than one car. It's a lovely area of town. I've seen all of it. Driving around looking for a place to park. That's one of the worst places in Boston to live if you want to park a car. A loft in Beacon hill. Hope you have very deep pockets. http://www.bostonapartments.com/apartments-for-rent-BOSTON%20-%20BEACON%20HILL.htm

You'll be lucky to get a parking spot for $800 a month, and it will be quite a walk to your apartment. No parking garages in Beacon hill.

And you haven't even started to look into the driving rules. (appendix post)

-- To obtain a general idea of how to drive in Boston, go to a Celtics game and carefully watch the fast break. Then get behind the wheel of your car and practice it.

-- Never take a green light at face value. Always look right and left before proceeding.

-- When in doubt, accelerate.

-- Very generally speaking, the intransigence of the Boston driver is directly proportional to the expense of his American-made car, and inversely proportional to the expense of his foreign-made car. But in applying this formula, bear in mind that they are all more or less intransigent.

-- In the long run, parking your car in a lot is always cheaper than parking it at a meter.

-- Drivers whose cars sport "I Brake For Animals" bumper stickers may brake for animals, but they may not brake for you. Watch it.

-- Never drive behind a person whose head doesn't reach the top of the steering wheel.

-- Teenage drivers believe they are immortal. Don't yield to the temptation to teach them otherwise.

-- Taxicabs should always be given the right of way, unless you are bent on suicide.

-- Never, ever, stop for a pedestrian unless he flings himself under the wheels of your car.

-- The first parking space you see will be the last parking space you see. Grab it.

-- Learn to swerve abruptly. Boston is the home of slalom driving, thanks to the Registry of Motor Vehicles, which puts potholes in key locations to test drivers' reflexes and keep them on their toes.

-- Steer clear of people with anti-nuclear bumper stickers pasted on their cars. They are interested in preserving mankind, which is admirable. But they are not necessarily interested in preserving you, or themselves, for that matter. They have more important things to think about.

-- Never get in the way of a car that needs extensive body work.

-- Double-park in the North End of Boston, unless triple-parking is available.

-- Always look both ways when running a red light.

-- While it is possible to fit a 15-foot car into a 15-foot parking space, it is seldom possible to fit a 16-foot car into a 15-foot parking space. Sad but true.

-- There is no such thing as a shortcut during rush-hour traffic in Boston.

-- It is traditional in Boston to honk your horn at cars that don't move the instant the light changes.

-- Never put your faith in signs that purport to provide directions. They are put there to confuse people who don't know their way around the city.

-- Use extreme caution when pulling into breakdown lanes. Breakdown lanes are not for breaking down, but for speeding, especially during rush hour.

-- Never use directional signals, since they only confound and distract other Boston drivers, who are not used to them. Think of it as telegraphing your punch, it just gives away your intentions.

-- Similarly, never attempt to give hand signals. Boston drivers, unused to such courtesies, will think you are waving them on to pass you.

-- The yellow light is not, as commonly supposed outside the Boston area, a signal to slow down. It is a warning to speed up and get through the intersection before the light turns red.

-- Never pass on the left when you can pass on the right.

-- In making a left turn from the right lane, employ the element of surprise. That is, do it as suddenly as possible, so as to stun other drivers.

-- Speed limits are arbitrary figures posted only to make you feel guilty.

-- Whenever possible, stop in the middle of a crosswalk to ensure inconveniencing as many pedestrians as possible.

-- Remember that the goal of every Boston driver is to get there first, by whatever means necessary.

-- When driving down a one way street stay to the right and let oncoming traffic pass on the right.

-- there are areas of Boston that you cannot get to if you are not willing to ignore the rules of the road (i.e. one way street signs).

-- There is a reason why "The Artery" is depresed.

-- While taxi drivers always have the right of way, they make way for Courier vehicles.

-- Making eye contact is a sign of weakness.

-- Parking in the North end is hard, parking in Southie is easy. If you can stop the car you can park.

-- There is one legal parking spot in Boston. And it is taken.

-- Red lights do not mean stop. A car stopped in front of you means stop.

-- Two lanes can fit three cars abreast. Regardless of the direction of any car.

-- If you you are waiting at an intersection for someone to let you in. Your parked and might as well get out of the car.

-- Who has the right of way at a 4 way stop sign? The 76 Lime Green Buick to your right.

-- Above all, keep moving.

Sid,

You missed the ever so useful "Boston rule of palm" when driving.

- Put either left or right hand as a blinder to the side of your face when in bumper to bumper traffic or at a light. If you can't see another car beside you, the lane is yours and you can change at will, without your directionals. Conversely, if you are in the car that is blocked from sight via rule of palm, you can be cut off, and as such, should accelerate quickly to back of the bumper of the car in front of you.

Grew up in Stonedham, left in '90. Only miss Italian Subs and fried clams.

Odd all the Boston art skool folks. Art Institute of Boston here...

Farquhar, at least you'll be used to the weather.

Pshaw. Good Guinness is what you should be missing.

That and a Nice Buzzy's roast beef sandwich.

Rule of the palm: I prefer the no eye contact method. Works better in a big truck.

I mean at 2am, after a night on landsdowne or at the old paradise, you can choose between food, a drunk fight, or throwing fries at the rats. While I like Buzzy's, under the shadow of barbed wire, a very a trippy edge, I really prefer the local color of Revere Beach and it's amazing collection of applicator shells.

As for Guiness? I reserve that pleasure for trips to Dublin. When back East, I try and dig up some Catamount.
