I reguarly jack up the rear and front end, remove the wheels and spray all components with engine cleaner on top to bottom. I'll even use brake cleaner to remove really nasty stuff. I then connect my pressure washer to my hot water heater and thoughly clean the engine, suspension, wheel wells, etc. I don't cover the distributor cap, alt, etc. Of course I don't blast it with full pressure either. I've done this for years w/o problems. It really helps to clean out places a hose can't get to.

I occasionally wax the inside of the wheels when I take them off. You'd be surprised how easy the grime comes off with wax on the inside rims.

I've also cleaned under the car at one of those self serve drive in washers where you use your hose. I've taken the wax wand and just lay wax in wheel wheels and under car. Does a nice job of making dirt and grime removal easier.
