Default Do I need 4WD in a tow vehicle?

Hello,
I am shopping for a diesel crew cab truck and would like some opinions on the need for 4WD. I do not plan to tow in snow but a friend who pulls horses said he has been stuck on wet grass. Is this a problem at the tracks on the east coast? Summit Point and VIR are the closest tracks but an occasional run to farther tracks is possible. I'd appreciate any experiences. Yes, I can install a locker, just don't want the extra hardware if it's really not needed. The trailer will likely be 20 or 24 enclosed.

Thank You,
Bill

I have 2wd 2500 truck and have never needed 4wd for towing in 9 years. However I never have paddocked on grass. A good idea is probably an LSD in the truck to be on the safe side, but for me I would never need 4wd in my tow vehicle.

I've had two Suburbans as tow vehicles and neither was 4WD. Don't think you really need it. On those rare occasions when you might get stuck in wet grass at the track, someone will certainly help you get out. But 99% of the time, you won't need 4WD.

If you have LSD then you don't really need to worry about it. My Denali XL is 2wd, The F250 TD I previously used is also 2wd.

No it is not necessary, but it is nice to have if you have to park your trailer in a field like we do around here. 4wd will also lower your towing capacity in most cases.

I use mine for work as well and get into some real crap off road. Also can't get up and down the streets around the house in the snow without it. If it wasn't for that I wouldn't have it.

Well it depends on your hobbies. As I enjoy atv riding and camping, so 4x4 is a must for that. If you dont get 4x4, atleast get the diesel as the towing power and gas mileage will surpass all the rest. I perfer the power choke Ford.

Mine is not as heavy but I have a 2WD Suburban and tow an 18' steel trailer with the 944. No problems so far.

Can't wait to get a diesel though...
