I may never own a Porsche

My first one was a $875 944 at 20, then a $9900 968 at 22. Most people that buy 944s don't buy them to fulfill a dream, but to take the first step towards it. I myself don't want a 911 - the 968 was the dream I was working towards. Next is just to make it faster.
My dad's owned 3 911s and 3 928s, and I've owned a 944 and 968. How do you define a "Porsche"? Of these cars, the 928 had the highest concentration of Porsche parts. It was also the least sporty or nimble. The 911s are faster than the 968 but the 968 is easier to control. The 944 doesn't even "look" like a "Porsche" but it outhandles its contemporaries, or anything else for that price!
If you're more into aircooled's, the 914 is cheap but starting to jump in value. The best value on a 911 is the 78-83 911 SC, with the bulletproof 3.0 engine. Or seriously consider a beetle or karmann ghia, as they are also brainchildren of Porsche and resemble the 356, both on and under the surface.
You definitely don't need $65k to make the Porsche dream come true.
I live in a 1 bedroom apartment.

I never really understood the joy about owning a Porshce. The joy is in driving one and ownership is simply the means to that end. I waited until I was 31 to buy my first Porsche, a 986S. After starting PCA DE I regretted not buying a 944 or 914 five or six years earlier. Although getting the keys handed to you at Stuttgart may well be a great experience, and I am informed it is, you need not wait to make it your first Porsche experience.

You guys are right.
It was a 1961 Volkswagen bug that I started to appreciate Porsche design and engineering. So you don't misunderstand, to me a Porsche is all about driving I don't really care what people think of me because I drive a Porsche it is purely driving first then the engineering, design that interests me in that order.

Well then your dreams are easy to realize. For less than 5k you can get into a porsche (or vw) that fits your bill, is in nice shape, and will keep your hands full, on the road and in the garage. My first was a $875 944 and by the time I had it restored and tip-top I was in a total of $4k, which isn't bad!
Personally I like Porsches for working on then driving. We all have different passions but the same mistress!

So I guess a 944 is a good way to get into a Porsche. I even like the way they look. I guess not knowing much about them I thought they must handle crappy or something.

Crappy-they are perfectly balanced!! Almost a 50/50 ratio as the tranny is in the back. They are about the sweetest car you will ever drive!!! 0-60 isn't their thing but there is good torque. Get a good one, and that means condition not $$$ and you will be happy as h@%l

The PCA is good about owners of cheaper cars too. I have been a Arizona PCA member since 1999 and it has been a great experience. Real Porsche people don't care if you have new GT3 or 25 year old 944 that you got for 4k.
If you want a 911 you can easily get one for 10k to 30k. How much you spend depends on what year you want.

go to the local Porsche dealer with a suit on, and act cocky and ask the guy for a test drive, then when they try to convince you to buy, tell them you make 300$ a month and your credit score is a 580 and they will let you be on your way it works all the time !! ^_^
