I got a couple of seasons of the Magnum PI DVD sets for Christmas and was poking around the web and found an interesting bit of trivia about the show.
The producers originally intended to use a Porsche 928 and asked Porsche to produce one with an extra large sunroof for aerial shots. Due to a strict policy by Porsche of not doing any special specifications at customer requests, the Ferrari 308 GTS was chosen instead.
Some websites state they used 3 Ferraris during the life of the show ('79, '81,'84). The seat was modified to allow Selleck to fit in the car. As the show went on, the '81 model was "modified", used for high speed scenes which the crew often borrowed to run errands. A third was used for closeups.
One car is on display somewhere in England, and Larry Manetti (Rick) owns another one.

Tom Selleck actually purchased three 928s for his co-stars as a thank-you gift.
