Default When did you first know?

When did you first know that you would one day drive a Porsche?

For me it was around 1969 or 1970 when I was in 5th grade. There was a silver 911 parked across the street from my school and I saw that car, unmoved, every day for two years. I assumed that the owner was off in Vietnam or somewhere. Why else would it never be driven? The moment that I realized that I would one day own and drive a 911 was around the same time. I was sitting in my mother's VW bug at a stoplight and saw a green 911. The car looked like a frog. At that moment I knew.

Anyone else car to share when they decided on owning a Porsche?

My dad brought home a Mexico Blue '69 912 in '76. I was fifteen. Stick a fork in me. I was done.

In 2001, I finally bought my first Porsche, a Leaf Green '69 911E, that I now use as my daily driver.

Default In 1970 Robert Redford spoke to me...

I guess it was about 1970. I was 12. I saw that 911 sliding and juking down that snowy hillside in "Downhill Racer" I knew I'd get one of those things eventually.

When I was about 18 I got a ride in a brand new 928S - the factory's photo car for the 83 Euro brochure. It was an unreal experience - this car combined the performance of the 3.3 liter turbo I had gotten a ride in with the ride comfort of Dad's Mercedes - unbelievable what this car could do!

When I was about 20 I started telling my friends that by the time I'm 30 I would drive a 928. They all laughed.

Well, when I was 30 I lived in the US, my boss had a 928 and wanted to sell it. Knowing how much I loved the car he offered it to me. I took it for a test drive over a weekend and loved the feel, but the car needed too much restoration. I passed, but kept my promise - I drove a 928 at the age of 30.

A few years later, when I realized that even the S4 had come into affordable price ranges, I bought my first. I now have my third; the one I want to keep forever...

Added December 7, 2005:
The whole story is now published in "The Real 928 - World Market Edition" by David Hemmings, soon to be available in my online store.

went to the 1986 Intl Auto Show, in the Kingdome in seattle.

there it was in all it's glory, an 87 928 S4. at 19 yo i didn't have $70k, but knew i'd own one some day.

14 years later...

i like the quote from the 997 commercial:

"it's a funny thing about a Porsche:
there's the moment you know you want one, there's the moment you first own one,
and for the truely afflicted, there's the decade or two that passes in between."

I've always been into muscle cars and drag racing. About 10 yrs ago I started to slowly change my interest to sports cars. Not being that knowledgeable, the only cars that did anything for me were Ferraris. I was sure I would have a used one someday. I tryed to like Porsches but none did it for me.Then the GT3 came over here. If I were to build my own Porsche that is exactly how I would do it. In June of 2004 I got married in a small town outside of Stuttgart. We took the factory tour while there and I saw GT3s in person for the first time(being built and across the street in the dealership). As soon as we got home, I started looking seriously at them. About a month later, while eating dinner, my wife said "Well, if you're going to get it when you retire, you might as well get it now." One week later the car was ordered and I took delivery on Dec 18, 2004. Now I am thinking of selling my last muscle car and buying a 1973 911. It is only a matter of time. So, in a nutshell: married a nice German girl, saw that the finer things in life are German, and the rest is history.

My Dad sold his 70 somthing 924 when I was about 5 yo. That was the first car I ever went over 100 in, at least I am told. I think I loved Porsche's since I was born though. I got my 968 @ 23 yo. I can run circles around my Dad's current 924s that he has a strange love for... HAhaha

Was there ever a car like the 917, or a movie like Le Mans ? Everyone knew that Porsches were the ultimate sports car, for drivers with real skill , cool nerves and quick reflexes. And we were sure that we were the right sort all right. In the blighted car world of the seventies, as other cars got weaker and slower, Porsches just got faster. The RS. And the turbo. The TURBO. It wasn't a turbo, it was the turbo.

I never knew I was going to have a Porsche, they were the unobtainable dream stuff of my youth, the stuff that was put aside for responsibility and adulthood. Until one day, about 10 years ago, I saw A 928 at a gas station, and I thought, I could have one of those if I wanted to ... I was on the slippery slope to Porsche ownership. Just thinking about that car and the idea that I could have one made me happy. Until one day, I realized that I wasn't getting any younger, and if I wanted something and could afford it, maybe I should have it.

Carpe Diem and all that.

I've always liked sports cars. My dad's friend used to race MGs and AHs in SCCA events in the 60s and 70s and told me how anyone could go fast in a straight line with a big V8 but sports cars were for "driving"!

Almost bought a 914 when I was 18 but it didn't have a/c and other creature comforts of a daily driver so I got a 280ZX instead. Sold that the week I got married. I've always liked the looks of the 944 and about 2 years ago I saw an '83 944 with 58Kmiles for sale and that lit my sports car fire again.

Did a lot of research and bought my first and current Porsche one year ago this month. An '89 944 Turbo, alpine white, blue interior, factory sport seats, leather option, factory 10 speaker stereo, and all the Turbo S goodies (M030 suspension, Brembo brakes, LSD, 250hp) with only 76Kmiles!

My intent was to keep it as stock as possible but I'm afraid I've already given into the dark side.

In high school I wanted a 2002 in the worst way (wanted a MGB GT in junior high). While in college I drove a classmate's 356 cab and was hooked. My uncle was then the first in the famlly to get a P car, a new 69 912. 2 years later, I got a 914 when finishing college, 6 months later my dad got one too, and we were on our way. My sister has had a 911, 944 and pristine 914. I've had one of about everything other than a 928 and still have my first one, which my kids will fight over when I'm gone. thought the Cayenne was a stupid idea until I needed a SUV...etc. May need a new 4 door sedan here in a few years...

There used to be a Porsche Motorsports poster above my bed when I was about 4. Looking back, I think that's what set the ball in motion.

I've yet to get that 944 I've been looking at.Soon, very soon hopefully. There are always going to be those 924turbos to look after as well. (two right down the road...)

When I was 3, I knew. For my birthday, my uncle sat me on his lap and told me I could steer.

16 years later I went to the dealership, was asked if I would like to start a 911 turbo, and I wet myself shortly after. that was the day I knew that I would have more than one in my stable.

It's been 26 years and counting... still waiting.

I think I know which one I want now, though.
