Default Mercedes maintainance/repair $ vs Porsche 911?

Hello guys / gals , I have been lurking on and off for a while, and signed up a few days ago. I am a big fan of German cars, and drive two German specimens, '00 E320 and '95 E320. I am entertaining getting a sports car by EOY 05, was thinking of a Vette, but then ding ding ding, realized I could pack my two young children in the Porsche back seats.... Price ? Seems reasonable, about $20-$30K for low-mid 1990's example.

Now my question... Having driven Mercedes for a while, I am used to the so called "high" maintainance, which is not as bad as outsiders think. I do some of my own engine work, time permiting, but am aware of the $650 price for replacing a water pump w/labor, $350 to do front or rear brakes, $1K for engine gasket... etc....

Those that have both MB and P cars, who do they compare $ maintainancewise and repairwise? The MB engines are bullet proof, lasting 200K + miles before rebuild.... How long typically to rebuild a P car engine? Price for the rebuild? MB you can pick up a factory rebuilt unit for about $5K.

I vaguely entertained a Ferrrari 80's, which can be had for about $30's, but figure maintainance is far more than the P cars?

thoughts?

General board doesnt get many eyes. Each car is different. I got 177k out of my last 911 with no major eng work and it was still running strong when i sold it! Newer models are more costly(electronics that are sometimes hard to DIY)

Thanks for the heads up. I will repost on the other board or if the mods want to move....

Similar with the MB.... older ones are easier to work on b/c less electronics and computer, etc. Thanks for the reply.

So far (touch wood) I've had less problems with my 02 996 than 01 CLK. Both have bullet proof engines but the CLK's driver seat motor went and there were some other minor problems. Service cost is a little more for the P car but service intervals are longer. I think, to some degree, it is luck of the draw. Since you do your own work, you are probably in a better position to spot a lemon than the average buyer. Good luck
