The insanity of the 911 market
So to start off I own a 2016 991.1 GT3 RS. I bought it used with 11k miles from the 2nd owner about 5 years ago. It took me a long time to find the options and color I wanted and I paid about 20k under MSRP long before COVID.
I am writing this post because, like many of you probably feel, the 911 GT3 market is bananas ### I thought this would end given the dramatic rise in interest rates but I have not seen much change in the inflated prices of GT3s from any year ###
What seemed to be the case for many years is one would pay 10-20k over for a new GT3, maybe 50k for an RS, and then when ready to sell a few years later with a few thousand miles an owner could expect to get close to MSRP for their gently used car from the second owner.....
These days I am still seeing many cars 991.2 and newer going for MSRP + 20-150k over as a used car.
A few things I really hate about this....
1.) Here in CA, maybe also in other states, one pays SALES tax on the ADM
2.) Here in CA the annual registration fee is based on the sales price of the car - double-whammy!
3.) Many owners are afraid to drive their cars for fear of diminishing their inflated value
4.) It leaves a bad taste, so to speak, to have been complicit in your own raping
5.) What happens when your 250k GT3 that you bought for 100k over gets stolen??? Will insurance be able to get you another one?? Will you have to pay again for the 100k over?
Now I get these cars are limited in production and supply chain bla bla bla BUT this is a problem that started LONG before the pandemic. In my humble opinion, when Porsche said they were no longer going to produce GT3s with a manual-transmission back in 2013 with the introduction of the dual-clutch in the 991.1 the GT3 market officially go out of control.
The 911 was meant to be an accessible, everyday sports car. The GT3 a bit more focused for those who wanted to go to the track. IDF WTF is going on now....
These cars are no longer accessible to "normal" people and don't even get me started on the European Delivery Program that no dealer will let you actually use.....
These STEALERSHIPS are colluding to fix prices and ruining the experience for pretty much everyone.
I don't know anyone with a 991.x or 992 that is happy about the price they paid for a new car.
Porsche doesn't seem to care either - I have seen some recent YouTube videos alleging this is all a scheme to get GT3 buyers into many, many cars for which they loose an incredible amount of cash for the promise of a GT3 at MSRP OR simply pay the 100k up front and save yourself the time.
Does anyone care? Can anything be done? I feel like I need to find a support group lol....

Porsche like Rolex and other brands produces less supply than demand, scarcity keeps people wanting more and chasing cars and so forth, and while it's not good for the end user(us) it's good for the long term brand value of Porsche because people with FU money can and do pay those prices which prices people out but keeps us wanting what we can't have.
But Porsche and the 911 has not been a car for the average joe in a long time, similar to how the Rolex submariner is also way beyond the grasp of an average worker.

@ATL_Ninja who makes an engaging vehicle these days? I was very curious about the Honda Civic Type-R but once again, 10-20k over lol.....
I think e46 m3's and e39 m5's that can be bought in the 20's and 30's are a great deal for what they are, and if I wasn't 6'3 I'd have an s2000 in my garage.

@ATL_Ninja I also own a 2016 GT3 RS so I'm certain it's all good.

@Pathy so most people don't know that the European Delivery Program actually costs the dealers money. Porsche gives said dealer another allocation for their trouble but the salesperson doesn't get anything SO most dealers (sales people), in my experience, tell customers that Euro delivery is not available on GT cars. I have called Porsche about this. That is why I know about the cost to dealers. IMHO Porsche has many problems and this is a BIG one. I would like to have that experience; no salesperson should take that away from me.

OP, the fact that you're in CA exacerbates the situation for you due to cost ownership/taxes and relative high discretionary income. Not to mention that CA has nearly 25% of all Porsche dealers nationwide yet it's GDP, relative to TX and NY doesn't match those economics.
This is still a "nationwide" issue though, but it won't be remedied until the economy falls into a real recession. Porsches (the current auto darling), second homes in mountain towns, etc. will finally deflate in value and individuals will be left holding the bag - not the dealers, not the real estate professionals because they're simple fee agents.
At one time a Beanie Baby, Miata, hover boards.... all sold for over cost and most of that has zero value now. Stupid is self correcting in time.
