Default In praise of Jerry Seinfeld

I attended the Rennfest Reunion this weekend and thought I would pass along a personel observation. Jerry Seinfeld brought a few of his great collection to be viewed at the Reunion. One of the best cars there was his 917 Solar Productions displayed as the #20 car from the movie Lemans. Great to see this car, but then Jerry shows up to drive it on Daytona track for exhibstion display. I was in his pit garage when he satrted it up and got to not only hear this great car in a garage, wow, but just as good was to see sh*t eating grin on Jerry's face when engine came to life, he obviously enjoyed it as much as we did, a true sign of an enthusist. He drives the 917 on its few parade laps and then parks it for the pit lane concourse. Now I guess a person of his noteriety could have just skipped out through a rear door or had his "people" ready with alimo to wisk him away before we "commoners" could bother him but no, he starts walking around looking at all the great Porsches like the rest of us car people. I think I could hear Steve McQueen laughing with joy in the realisation that a true enthusist has that special 917. So hears to you Jerry on your birthday, saw that notice on news this morning, hope you enjoy your 50th as much as we all enjoyed the cars you brought out to Daytona. Maybe some day he will bring a car out to Sebring for real retro event back to the 70s.

Jerry is definately cool! He is always at the Porsche Memorabilia Meet in soCal. He tolerates the the people that wants autographs or talk about their favorite episode. But if you ask him a Porsche question, he will stop and talk and talk. Very down to earth guy. I was lucky to work for him building scale model Porsches of his collection and got to deliver the finished models to the studio.
Jerry LOVES his Porsches!

Rich-I was at Rennsport and even got an autograph and picture with Jerry. You were right, when they opened the door to his 917 he was grinning from ear to ear. The asked him if he enjoyed the ride. His answer was "Where else could you go and have a 917 traffic jam with Hurley Haywood in front of you!!" It was a great time had by all. Tom

there's a great scene of him at Hershey and him making a cross-country trip in a vintage Bug in "Comedian" Seems like a pretty cool guy.

He was definitely VERY cool. A little while after he rolled up, I went up to him, shook his hand and got him to sign my pit pass. He had a smile on his face thru the whole event. There was not a single soul there not wearing a smile.

Hi Fellas,

I too was at the RR-II at Daytona...had a smile on my face most of the time as well. On Saturday, I bumped into Jerry in Pit Lane at the Concours while he was walking around with Derek Bell.

Nice to see all of the famous drivers and a true Porsche enthusiast like Seinfeld there in a FAMOUS 917K. Next time I'll ask Jerry a Porsche question so I can chat with him too. Where was his 917 garaged at the event? I'm sure I snapped some photos of it...just didn't realize it was his car. Also, was Paul Newman there??? I kept looking for him but never heard any buzz. I did see one car (a 935?) with his name on it, however.

Does anyone know if there is a website with information about Jerry's Porsche collection in detail?

Thanks,
Tim

Jerry, if you are reading this - I second all the kind sentiments towards you. You are a TRUE enthusiast and IMHO no one is more deserving of the cars you own, than you yourself! I truely hope you have found an anonymous username that allows you to participate in these forums, because the rennlist is the ultimate porsche accessory. A true enthusiast is in heaven in these forums!

I'm no comedian, but like you I've started off with a 944 turbo - and I have my heart set on a 917. Everything I've wished for so far has come true...

I would love to see the car. When I was a young kid, Steve McQueen lived up the street a ways (on Solar Drive, hence "Solar Productions" 917), and he would often stop and shoot the breeze while I drooled on his cars (I now only can remember the red Ferrari). Probably my early inspiration to become a Porsche nut.

Jim,
Did you ever meet Steve McQueen's son, Chad? I believe I saw him driving the Speed Merchants (yellow) GT-1 at the RR-II event. Man, was that car ever fast on the banks and straights....seemed to be blowing by most of the others with aplomb...
Cheers,
Tim
