Most people still don't even know that this stainless 1967 Porsche 911 even exists, let alone the story as to why it exists.

You mention there may be more than one. Could be someone simply painted them and covered up the fact that they were stainless steel and they are still driving around and the current owner is unaware.
Lots of Delorian owners have done this.

Keep in mind that today the entire rear clip of the Cayman is stainless steel. When in the early stages of manufacturing development it was discovered that the complex curves on the rear of the Cayman were impossible to accomplish with their normal steel. It would crack. They had to go to stainless steel to pull it off. I venture to guess that 90% of Cayman owners have no idea that their back clips are stainless.

I wonder if the flexibility of the normal steel vs the stainless was an issue with the presses.

There is also a rumor that there are 3 BMW E9 CS Coupes built in SS. Where as Karman was an independent company building chassis for numerous manufacturers, they could very likely have built a few on contract . . who knows?
