Are hard tops really better performers?

Given I live in Seattle, where you can count on rain like eight months out of the year, I'll always opt for a hard top. But if I still lived in LA, I'd probably go for a convertible... It's just to awesome to go for a drive on a chilly night with the top down. I definitely appreciate that feeling more than lower lap times.
