Porsche Pre-Purchase Inspections - Nationwide, On-Site
Hey all! New Rennlist sponsor here. My name is Frank Kosarek, and I'm the founder of inspectX (http://www.inspect-x.com). We're a network of Porsche, BMW, Audi, and Land Rover technicians who perform on-site pre-purchase inspections nationwide.
Brand and model-specific experience are super important to us. Not only would we send a Porsche specialist to check out a 964, for example, but we'd also make sure that the tech has significant experience working on air-cooled '90s cars.
My email address and a link to our website are below - please feel free to reach out if you need an inspection on any car.
Thanks!

@81911: If the car is located at a dealership, we ask to use a lift on the premises. If the car is for sale with a private-party, we use a jack and jack stands to lift one axle at a time for undercarriage visibility. We can still get great visibility of suspension components and the engine underside.
We use Porsche PIWIS II software.

When I say dealership, I mean a third-party (non-Porsche) dealer. Almost all of them are that we've dealt with have been totally open to us using one of their lifts. It also sends a message to the buyer that they have nothing to hide because they aren't trying to make an inspection harder than it needs to be.

@81911: Yes, almost all of the cars we inspect are non-CPO cars. Porsche dealers usually try to discourage third-party inspections on CPOs in order to stand by their own coverage.

I'm sure Frank is right about Porsche dealers' behaviour, as he's got a ton more experience in this matter than me. That said, I would absolutely recommend that anyone buying a CPO also have their vehicle inspected by an indy or even a competing Porsche dealer. My dealer successfully tried to get me to forgo the inspection ("You can spend the money if you want, but don't you think any issues will surface during the 2 year CPO?"), and they were hiding a lot of issues that a good inspection would have turned up (i.e. undisclosed collision damage). Had I know of the issues I'd own a different car, no doubt about it. Even if they had to do it on jack stands, I'd want the piece of mind of a good PPI, and any dealer that outright refuses one is hiding something.

@joel67: You're definitely right - CPO alone isn't enough to save you from potential problems down the line. Around 90% of our Porsche techs work for dealerships full-time, so it can be challenging to ask a tech to inspect a car that their same dealership is selling as a CPO. We handle that on a case-by-case basis, but it's certainly something we're happy to help with.
Thanks!

@topjimmy: On average, our inspections cost $350, which covers the technician's travel, two hours of inspection time, full photo documentation of any issues discovered, and a completed 200-point inspection checklist. The charge depends on the travel distance for our local tech to the car's location.
Thanks!

As a someone (newly) in the market, after reading the forums here it’s clear a PPI is imperative. Having opened my search nationwide, finding a shop to do PPI local to the prospect car is difficult, especially when the market moves fast. I certainly will look at this as an option for PPI when I find the right car!
