Slipped sleeve a good bet. There is an article in the December Panorama, an engine swap for that exact problem on a Boxter. You may want to read it and keep up on the follow ups, it is a 3 part series. They are putting in a 3.4 litre Carrera engine.

 

What did you end up getting for the car? always good to see what the market is. I thought about buying this car, but found a 2002 with 35k for $7500. Running and driving with a bad repaint.
