My understanding of the potential problem, is OEM glue failure on the glass, causing the glass to start pulling out of the frame, usually at the top. Apparently, OEM used a glue painted on the glass, that ended up looking like a black painted stripe just inside of the metal frame. UV breaks it down, and the "stripe" starts cracking, peeling and disappearing over time. Instead of just a simple cosmetic failure, the bind between the glass & frame is actually weakened. Then supposedly the pressure of the hatch struts, because one end is attached to the car chassis, start pulling on the hatch frame which is anchored at the top via the hinges. Over time, the pulling/separation can actually cause a gap to open between the glass & frame. I've also read that new struts installed to replace ones that no longer hold up the hatch can unexpectedly accelerate the problem.
A clue that separation is occurring is the visibility of "dimples" in the glass at the top of the hatch frame. I've read these dimples would have been flush or inside the metal frame during original installation of the glass. When the bond weakens, and/or struts start pulling out, the dimples start moving away from the frame. About 1/2 inch or so behind the dimples is the edge of glass.
I've seen the dimples & gaps on various hatches, but unfortunately don't have pics.
