General

This is a 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, finished in Guards Red, a black leather interior, and a black folding soft top. It has 91,221 miles, and a clear title in the sellers name. This example is from what’s called the “impact bumper” era of the legendary air cooled 911 line. The Porsche 911 did not come from the factory with a convertible option until the 1983 model year, with the 3.0 liter, 172HP 911SC. The droptop version was produced thanks to the CEO of the company of that time, Peter Schutz, who introduced the Cabriolet to begin expansion of the 911 model line, which had been slated to end completely until Schutz intervened. In the following year of 1984, the 911 SC was replaced with the 911 Carrera, which is the example you see here. What also makes this example stand out is that the car was brought to the United States new as a personal import, brand new, and is a German specification car that used the “grey market” process to legalize the car for use in California. The Carrera was produced from 1984 through the first half of 1989, with a 3.2 liter, 200HP flat six, and utilized the 915 5-speed manual transmission for the first three years.

CARFAX REPORT

Exterior

The exterior is finished in Guards Red, and comes with the optional larger 16’ Fuchs alloy wheels. The exterior is standard and unmolested. As a European specification model, there are a few telling details that differentiate the car from the North American versions. In addition to the E-code headlights in place of sealed beams, there are turn signal repeater lights in the front fenders behind the front wheels, a rear red fog light next to the exhaust outlet, and the slimmer Europeans rear bumperettes, with more room between them meant to accommodate the wider European plates. A Porsche crest was also added below the standard issue “Carrera” script on the rear deck. The convertible top is original to the car, manually operated, in black fabric with a plastic rear window. It is in good shape, though the current owner notes that it is a bit stiff to raise and lower, as it’s not frequently used.

Interior

The interior is finished in black leather, with the standard electric sport seats. The leather is in great condition, with the front seats being redone with new leather in 2018. The rest of the interior is in excellent condition as well, with minimal wear of the carpets, and no cracks in the plastics or missing trim.

Mechanical

The car is in excellent running condition, with no known issues. The transmission was rebuilt in 2018 and the seller notes a performance chip is added to the car along with a new exhaust. As a European spec car, the motor has a higher compression ratio, and typically had shorter gear ratios than their American counterpart.

Extra

This Carrera Cabriolet has no known accidents, with original paint, and the current owner is the third in the car’s history. The Carfax reports no issues or discrepancies, and confirms the low mileage. Carfax also reveals that the car spent it’s early life in Orange County in California, before being purchased by the current owner in June of 2019. What is interesting about the grey market process is that the car receives a door jamb plate that specifies the name of the person importing it, which is stamped into the plate. This process was accepted at the time and makes this car legal by US standards, a legal loophole that was closed by US regulators thanks to pressure from European makers who were losing money on the sales of independent imports. While the name of that original owner is clearly “Michael Douglas” on the import plate in the door jamb, and the car is verified to have spent its early years in California at the right time, we can neither confirm nor deny that the Mr. Douglas in question may be of acting fame.

Between the color and the year, this is a very desirable and well-kept example of an early 911 Cabriolet. The seller has maintenance records going back to 1999, and a clean Carfax report going back to 1993, which is about as far back as the service will go. As an early Carrera, having the 915 transmission rebuilt in 2018 addresses the major concern with these specific models. At this point, with air cooled 911's reaching all time highs, this is an excellent chance to own an incredible example with a well detailed background.
