Default HowTo: Checking and Adjusting Parking Brake

This procedure is the same for the 964 and 993 (and who knows what else) and on a difficulty scale of 0-10 is a 1 with a potential frustration level of around 8. Anyway:

If you can pull your parking brake lever up more than 4 teeth without much force and without any braking effect, the parking brake must be adjusted.

The tools you'll need are
  1. Philips Head Screwdriver
  2. Beefy (not British) Flathead Screwdriver
  3. 13mm wrench (2)
  4. Tire Iron (part of the sacrificial anode from the front trunk)
  5. Torque Wrench
  6. 19mm Extended Socket

The first thing you need to do is push back the brake pads on the rear axle until the brake disc can be turned easily. To make this easier find the brake fluid reservoir in the front trunk.

and remove the cap (red arrow) so your not trying to compress air as you push the pads/pistons back into the caliper bore.

The next step is to loosen the adjusting nuts (green arrows) on the cable holder until the cables are without tension.

to get there goto the rear of the center console:

and remove the rubber insert (on the tray bottom) that might be held in with double sided tape (use 3M adhesive remover to loosen and remove it to reveal the two philips head screws (red arrows)).

Now its time to adjust the parking brake. You'll need to insert a flat-head screwdriver through the bore of the brake disc and turn the adjusting gear until the rear wheel can no longer be turned.

You'll first need to find the proper opening on the brake disc(yellow arrow)

and rotate the disc until the hole lines up with the parking brake adjusting cog. Finding the cog is a nightmare if you've never done this before. Even with a bright light shining on the brake disc you won't really know what to look for and even if you did its probably covered in rust and blends in with everything else. If you remove the disc (but don't unless your lost or its rusted to the point of not turning and you need to hit it with PB-Blaster) this is what your looking for:

On the left-hand side (drivers side in the USA) the adjusting cog is at 3:40 (red arrow) and 8:10 on the passenger side. The brake disc holes may not line up with the cog when one side is aligned so just rotate the individual disc your working on until it does.

When the holes are lined up you'll need to turn the adjusting cog until the rear wheel can no longer be turned. To do so push the flat-head screwdriver through the disc bore and rotate/click (right-to-left on the drivers side, left-to-right on the passenger side) the cog until you can no longer turn the rear wheel (don't remove the disc, I did only for the photo).

Every time the screw/cog clicks the brake shoes (top & bottom)

are pushed up against the inside of the brake rotor:

asbestoless brake liner:

When you can't turn the rear wheel anymore, turn back the adjusting cog until the wheel can be turned easily (it took 4 clicks for me) and then turn back (loosen ) by two more catches (reversing almost everything you just did)

Now go back into the cabin and pull up the parking lever two teeth (clicks) and turn the adjusting nuts on the cable holder so that both wheels are hard to turn by hand. On the cable holder there are two nuts, the adjusting nut (green arrow) and the locking nut (red arrow). Just start turning the adjusting nut (clockwise) and then try to spin a rear wheel with your hands. When it starts getting difficult to turn the wheel turn the locking nut (clockwise).

The next step is to release the parking brake lever and check whether both rear wheels can be turned easily. If you pull the lever up 3 or 4 clicks the parking brake should engage and you won't be able to turn the wheel.

Your done...
