I recommend around the column. Sorry about the big pic. Current string pots feature a metal wire rather than plastic.

I wanted to keep the wire either before the 1st knuckle or after the second due to non-linearity's...

I can probably get you a pick from a Cup next week. I have non Cup pictures that look like Peter's.

For the nonlinearity, you should be able to make a custom sensor that will fit the curve. Just take more points instead of the normal 3. If you search, Winders had to do the same thing.

Thanks Matt,

Since I don't have a cup, perhaps some of those pictures would be good. I actually still have the rug down - I am in complete denial of that I may already be somewhat down that racer car slope :-)

Will you be at 48hours?

Don't have time for C&S, car still in many bits & pieces, will be at 48 hours and would like to have this sensor, and perhaps brake & accel. in...

That pict is Geoffrey Ring's 964 Motec monster. Not sure that a 997 steering column is the same.

Just an example. Not for a specific car. As Matt's example shows, this is a very simple and common way to mount this type of sensor and collect this information.

If you can't put the string pot before the first universal joint or after the last one, read this thread:

I found this searching for the answer to the same question in the OP.

Not a lot of options on the 996, here is how mine is mounted - I have some finalizing to do but this should give folks interested in an install location an option.

I will be using Winders cal method he kindly linked to.
