Default WiFi Technology in Racing (F1)

Here's a cool article on how Mercedes has team up with Qualcomm to use WiFi for download as the car is still moving on pit lane. http://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/an...haring-745239/

They have it at an amazing IT level. I've done pretty similar at some pro races with being able to grab data before the car is stopped, out of the way of the pit crew to make decisions faster and faster.

I can't imagine the chipsets and system they have to transfer that much info that fast.

That's awesome. I've spent the last 11 years doing large scale wifi design and implementations. I think it would be a blast to get to design high speed transport for race teams.

Yep, that's a neat piece. Even RCP makes cell packet transmission possible for the club racer or track day driver...

Of course, you need people in the pit lane to read it and do something about it!

I remember microwave burst technology that would dump data every lap from F1 and DTM cars. They may still use that system. The numbers were staggering.

Of course, from the comments, "the TAG-320 (Spec F1 ECU) has a 1Gbps ethernet interface and the fastest 5GHz WiFi available is 780Mbps."

Traveling 80 kmph with a 5G nominal range of 115 ft, that gives you 2 seconds to dump what you need, if the car is just passing through the pits. Pretty cool.

AiM had to disable the wireless on the Mychron5 when it's moving because people where using it as a constant telemetry connection.
