I'm not surprised - Racelogic is probably the worlds authority on automotive GPS tracking.

(Now they just need to get their act together on CAN interfaces)

I have used the VBOX Sport since its release (my demo unit as a larger Racelogic dealer) and have extensive experience with this device.
my vbox is in the storage bin behind the driver (GT4) and the external antenna is magnetic. I feed the cable through the rear trunk to the roof. It comes of very easily after the event... (2 minutes) or you can leave it on till you're home and take it off then....

as I already have the iPhone mounted to the front window I didn't want another device mounted there that hinders vision or could come loose (ok slim chance but still a chance)

It is my understanding that the antenna needs to be grounded. Are you able ground it based on how you use it?

The antenna doesn't need to be grounded, but it does need a ground plane underneath it to work well...

Any chance the antenna could scratch the paint?

Yes, from what I read on Vbox's Web site, it seems that mounting the antenna in the center of the roof should work without having to do anything special:

Marc, how do you run the GPS cable? Just up through the highest part of the trunk opening? Do you tape the cable down?

Put the magnetic antenna on center top about an inch from trunk
Open trunk and feed the cable through in the middle top.
Leaving enough space to each vbox in storage bunch it up and put in storage unit.
Close trunk

Don't ziptie it as you will need to untie it to take it off car.

Be careful. The antenna lead is easily crushed or cut.

Marc, thanks!

Peter, do you have a setup that you think is less likely to damage the cable?

Default TP 1.6 is almost here...

I tested a beta version last weekend and just got the released version so I can use it on the track this weekend.

keep an eye on your app updates as it should be here soon (but it might miss the weekend)

PM me if you need the release notes

How did the GT4 CAN work this weekend?

Certainly not unless it's defective. Mount position as you know is critical. The XGPS160 is known to be one of the best if not THE best for a bluetooth set up. I suspect it's more to do with TP. If you are on android load Racechrono and you can compare using both the vbox and xgps temp mounted side by side in the back window.

Personally I'd go with the Garmin Glo for $99 over the XGPS...just as good but longer battery life.

Yes, I've got a sneaking suspicion that the track I posted above exaggerates the difference between the two GPS devices. I do think the Vbox is better, if only for that fact that it's 20 Hz versus the XGPS160's 10 Hz. Also, I like the fact that the Vbox will log your drive regardless of whether the software on your phone is working correctly; it's a nice backup. Lastly, the Vbox works with Racelogic's Circuit Tools app, which is very impressive.

I've got a new version of Porsche Track Precision app (it'll be released publicly pretty soon) so I'll test with that and another app if I can find one that'll export .vbo files.

Fun, fun...

Thanks for the update and look forward to your post on how they both did with the new software.
