Default Aim Solo 2 DL + Smartycam HD 2.1 (+ aspirin please!)

Hi folks

I’m having a couple of odd behaviours with my setup. It’s not in a Porsche but please bear with me anyway. My config is pretty complicated - but that all works fine. The only issues I have are these:

The Solo 2 DL issue is that, irrespective of the “wake from ecu” setting, if the can bus is running the thing cannot be powered off - turn off, it comes back on. I’ve tried placing a switch in the 12v line - which is how I found it’s related to the bus not the power. The only solution I have is to completely disconnect the car connection every time. My car’s can bus is “live” all the time - Tesla. Does anybody have “wake from ecu” disabled and working?

Second problem: it’s my understanding that the camera should switch on when the logger is switched on (yes, no problem) and shut down when the logger is switched off, which in my case (as above) means disconnected from the car and then turned off on the unit. But the camera doesn’t shut down - it just stays on until it’s inactivity timer times out. Have I misunderstood how this should work?

Also I have a menu option on the SCHD not described in the manual. What is “display t/o”?

Thanks so much for any help - you guys seem to know everything about these boxes. Even Aim support couldn’t answer these!

display t/o is to have the display turn off when recording.

The camera turns off based on the timer setting (based on no activity). If it is continually awoken by the logger, it will not go off. Otherwise it will turn off x minutes after stopping recording.

I believed the wake from ecu setting was working, but don't have a unit to check things out.

Right. Thanks. So I was slightly misguided - but that’s ok, I get it now.

Now all I need is someone to help with the “wake from ecu”.

Have both of these issues and have had for two years. Have yet to find anyone who can help. Many insist it is wired incorrectly, which it isn’t. Thanks for posting this.

Jim, I'm assuming for the GT4.

Second issue first. The camera is powered up when power is supplied to the logger that it's connected to. It shuts off after a user configurable delay, the default is longer, but we generally recommend five minutes. The reason for this is that in most instances, if the power were shut off and the camera shut off, the video file would not successfully close, resulting in corrupted video. So, the internal battery in the camera allows for this, even when the supply is shut off while it is recording video. To set, select Menu>Settings>Auto Power Off. Select five minutes (even if you have a minimum five minute pit stop) and it will be good to go.

The first question can be directly influenced by the attachment to the car. If OBDII, battery power is supplied at all times even with key-off. Only good fix is either an OBDII cable between the car and the AiM Solo 2 DL OBDII plug with a rocker switch to disable power, available at Amazon or, in a direct wire connection, using the bottom row of key-on services fuses with an Add-A-Fuse.

Now, in the modern Porsches, including the 981-991-982 (718) models, the power supplied to key-on services is on any time the key is fully inserted AND for a period of time after you turn off the car and withdraw the key. This is for interior and exterior lighting delays and other services. It will eventually power down, then there will be a delay in shut down in the Solo 2 DL to whatever option you set for Auto Power off in the Solo DL and Solo 2 DL. Make sure to select Disable in Wake from ECU and you should be good to go.

I've personally installed or sent pre-configured systems to over two hundred 981 and 982 (718) GT4 street cars and about fifty to 981 and 982 (718) GT4 ClubSports. It does work and it's ok.

Peter, This is the second time you have been generous in trying to help me, and I really appreciate it. I have the Solo DL rather than the newer model. My SmartyCam does not power on automatically when the timer does, although it once did. No idea what’s happening with it or the Solo DL, which, when I hooked it up yesterday did not power on automatically, even when I started the car. From my experience, today means nothing, because tomorrow it is subject to behave completely differently
. It is wired into the fuse box precisely according to your graphic, and it records the data just as it is supposed to. By all appearances, it does not recharge from the car’s power connection, however, and thus I have to recharge it with a power pack to keep it working. I don’t see any “start up on ignition” command to disable. I did set the camera to the 5 min cutoff, however. I think my attitude about this setup is clear enough, and rather than elaborate, I’ll just say that the way it has worked—or failed to—makes me an excellent candidate for the Garmin Catalyst. Thanks for trying to help.
